Looks like it could be the charcoal canister but I am not positive based on that description and photo

Yes I believe the OBDII engines have a canister in the engine bay.

Look through the fuel supply and engine diagrams in www.realOEM.com, E36 is in the ‘Classic’ catalog. Use the last seven characters of the VIN to make it easier.

Think I found it, it's 18101740207 vacuum storage container. Thanks for the replies.
