Hi All,
I just bought this 97 m3 with an S54

Details:
S54 Swap using second gen can interface from gpeterson
PO did rod bearings with WPC treated OEM and new rod bolts, vanos rebuilt, and valve lash checked
Getrag 420g out of a euro s50b32 car
3.64 LSD
PO did all bushings, ball joints, bearings, tie rods, etc.
Yellow tag ZHP rack
Stock brakes with brass guide pin bushings
Reinforced Rtab pockets, engine mounts, and rear swaybar mounts
Koni Yellows with GC kit and top adjust rears
rear trailing arms and subframes powder coated
17x8.5 arc-8 wheels
Ebay headers
dual 2.5" exhaust with 200 cell metal core cats
x pipe into vibrant resonators and a stromung muffler
CSF radiator, spal fan



So far I have:
replaced fog lights (and one bracket which is a PIA with the bumper on the car)
Did a 2 stage paint correction and ceramic coating
Fixed a few minor interior issues
Set up a win7 laptop so I can start reading diagnostic codes




Current issues to look into or fix:

*Check control light is on for the hid conversion
*CEL is on for SAP delete
*Airbag light is on- not sure why yet but I'm guessing something related to seat occupancy sensor and it having e46 seats

*It has an aftermarket remote lock and security system that I find frustrating. The car locks itself automatically and sometimes it doesn't readily respond to unlock presses on the key.

*The car came to me about 2 quarts low on oil. Previous owners driveway is heavily sloped so getting an accurate oil reading would have been a pain. The car sat mostly undriven for multiple years too so it may just have a slow leak. I topped it off and set the trip meter and am going to monitor oil levels to see if its consuming any.

*The car has a base tune but never got the final dyno tune so I am planning to do a dyno tune next month. There are some minor driveability issues to look at also. Occasionally bucking at certain low load and rpm combinations and sometimes coasting down to idle at a stop the car will stall.

*paint in the inside of the rear hatch trim has failed and surface rust is forming. Need to decide how I'm going to handle that. Maybe por-15 after sanding it clean.

*Rear bumper paint is especially bad. A few other parts need repaint (mirrors and front bumper especially) but i am debating just having most or all of the car painted.

*Rear door pockets are separating from the door cards. Are these sometimes I can still order? I did a quick search and didn't find anything. I could also mix up some black structural epoxy. I have a few hysol products around and some black epoxy dye. Im hesitant to start permanently bonding anything on this car.

*The transmission has pretty intense input shaft bearing whine. I have just been pretending its a straight cut gearbox and it's race car noises but I should probably deal with that at some point. Previous owner did provide me with a new bearing to install.




Future plans:
*oil change and oil sample (going to do that this saturday)
*I bought a steering wheel spacer and will install that soon
*New tires
*Dyno tune - Hoping to hit around 300whp on a dynojet
*Cobra nogaros for the front
*PO gave me a front lip to install so I'll do that soon
*I'm slightly iffy on the reliability of the can interface. If anyone else here has the second generation gpeterson interface can they comment on how well it has held up? PO said he went through multiple first gen units. I have half a mind to get a canbus cluster and premptively require and install that before anything fails.
*The current shock/strut setup feels great- Zero complaints - but I'm a shock snob and motion control is calling to me.
*Some kind of rear shock tower brace and reinforcement. I have been looking around what what people do and currently thinking I want to weld something in place that addresses it pretty comprehensibly. Plates and a tubular brace or something.
*compression and possibly leakdown testing to satisfy my curiousity. Also depends on what oil consumption looks like and what my blackstone report says.






Before paint correction. There were a few wet sanded spots that cleaned up perfectly.

A couple notes:


Coding:

The github S54swap repo is your friend when it comes to coding and tuning. It seems daunting at first, but it's very figure-out-able. Watch both videos a couple times. I was able to delete all my CELs, correct my wheel diameter, change the redline, etc. And loading tunes is about a 30 second operation. Some of the guys who get into this side of things swap tunes like they change underwear. You have to make sure you have the "HP" DME to run certain tunes like the CSL tune, but there are lots of tunes floating around out there. Whoever does the dyno tuning for you will like try out a couple different tunes before settling on one for a base and going from there. When you get that done, be sure to keep your hood open and keep your MAF / IAT sensor from heat soaking. These things pull power big time when they get hot, and they get hot pretty easily. There are methods to pull the temp sensor wire from the MAF and relocate it to try to stave that off, but those are weeds you can get into later. Just keep it in mind for your tuning session. It'll make less power as it gets hot, so do what you can to avoid that. And your tuner should be aware.


Oil:

Good call on the Blackstone reports. Also note that the S54 only uses ... 5.5 - 6 quarts? I don't think it's the end of the world, but I'd keep an eye on that. It's not like an 8-quart-capacity S52 running a little low at 6 quarts. Mine uses way less than my S52, but then again, that thing was old and tired.


Swap kit / harness / wiring:

I used a Z3 cluster from MSportparts and the Kassell swap harness. I know gpeterson was the only game in town early on, but now it's far, far easier to just use the Z3 cluster for the CANBUS / AC functions.

However, I'm not sure that will solve your canbus issue (whatever it is). I have finally learned how to use INPA, and I can only read engine stuff. I can't see the ABS or Airbag or ANYTHING else that isn't just the engine. I don't know if I did something wrong, am just missing something, or if that's normal (the other guys I've talked with who have done the swap don't think that's normal, but they all did it much longer ago than I did).

I have my ABS light illuminated - but in my case, that means the ABS is WORKING. When the light goes out, it means I DON'T have ABS (and it DOES go out sometimes). And I can't get into the system to see what's going on, so just slowing trying stuff blind right now. So not sure if you're having similar weird behavior (or in other areas). If it causes a problem and I can't figure it out, I might take it to George Hill here in Austin to have him see if he can sort it out. But for now, as long as the light stays on I'm not overly concerned with it.


Driveability issues:

I saw some anti-bucking settings when I was poking around in the tuning. I have had this happen too a couple times (odd / bad throttle input in a terrible gear, like too much throttle in 4th at 15 mph). The E46 has some sensors the E36 doesn't have, like the steering angle sensor and some other stuff I'm unsure of related to the mk60 ABS from the E46. Swapping ALL that stuff over will give you the better ABS, and with the right work will enable both actual stability control and also cruise control. It MIGHT solve this bucking issue too, but I've found that making better gear / throttle decisions is the easiest way of just avoiding that problem.

Airbag light:

You can get a sim for the seat occupancy sensor for fairly cheap - odd that this wasn't addressed by your PO, but you can find that easily and have the light reset when you get your tune. If it DOES have the sim, it might be your buckle / crash pre-tensioner has gone bad.

Rear door pocket:

I pulled the whole card when that little post broke, drilled a hole into the pocket, and used a small screw to reattach. Or you could just glue/epoxy it. That's not something that EVER needs to come apart.

Curious what you paid, miles on the chassis, and miles on the motor?

I've got 276k on mine today, the motor had 125k when I installed it, and all in it cost me about $7k NET after selling all the stuff I pulled out or didn't use off the S54. I have about 3k miles on the swap, and just did my first track day at the end of May - and it was a lot of fun. Was finally able to keep up (kind of - new track) with the E46 and E9X M3s.

Haha, it doesn't look like your first, but it might be your favorite BMW.

I'm a total INPA novice so I can't help there.

The pre-tensioner is a frequent culprit for the airbag light, so it's entirely possible it was retained but failed. It's also possible it wasn't swapped or the e46 one was used and doesn't return the same signal the car is looking for. The occupancy sensor is the same story - you'd think the PO would have either swapped it to the new seat, gotten a sim, or plugged in the E46 sensor if it was compatible. I imagine you'll be able to see easily what's going on there of you look under the seat or pull the seat out to look at what's wired to it (or NOT wired up).

I don't know how to code that stuff out, but sims (at least for the occupancy sensor) are readily available and accomplish the task.

I don't know about the fuel tank plausibility code, but I WILL comment that post-swap my fuel gauge reads off by about exactly one gallon. 3/4 tank has only used 3 gallons of a 16 gallon tank, half 7 gallons, and 1/4 only 11 gallons. Even the light comes on with 3.5 gallons left instead of 2.5. So it seems like it could just be an issue that the S54 DME reads it differently? I don't know, just thoughts that might have something to do with it.

No, and I don't know how the gpeterson harness is set up, but lots of people delete the oil level sensor. But no, I imagine fuel level plausibility code is a level sender issue (or at least something in that ballpark).

I got BMW scanner 1.4 set up for reading engine codes easier than inpa. I already had it from my e46 but and didn't immediately occur to me that it could read the s54 dme.

I haven't been posting but I have done a lot of stuff with the car. So far I have:

*Accidentally killed my starter when I put it back together because I got distracted and didn't tighten starter lugs so I got to enjoy finding out what a huge pain in the ass starter replacement is on these.

I also started 3d scanning the front end and designing a fog light intake system for feeding CSL boxes or other intake parts. Its going to be built in 3 pieces. A short bellmouth flange attached to the bumper using the foglight hole threads, a center section that terminates flush with the flat area next to the shocktower, and a third piece that can be made application specific for CSL boxes or other intake systems on the e36. I'm planning to use 3d printed nylon for the first two sections and then layup carbon fiber from 3d printed molds for the third section.

Also I need to fix an issue with my getrag 420g and am planning to swap it for me ZF 6 speed after I fix it. A few days ago I was driving and something failed leading to the centering behavior at the shifter being off and also causing it to leak gear oil from somewhere relatively far forwarded- what appears to be above the clutch slave of the drivers side. I'll be pulling the trans soon to get a better look. The shifter wants to pull all the way to the left into the reverse spot without any resistance, first and second gear are extremely hard to find, and then there is a click where the shifter will sit in a position to the right of neutral. Before I started smelling the gear oil I had assumed I just had a detent failure but as best as I can tell its leaking further forward and on the opposite side of the transmission. Anyone have a guess what has happened?

This disappoints the hell out of me. That ass couldn't be bothered to go out and find his own Z3M cluster so he bought one that my cluster partner and I made and then he goes and makes everything public (I don't really have an issue with that, but he is not deserving of the credit and he doesn't understand all the aspects of what he's doing). Fuck that guy. He also isn't fixing them for the eventual EEPROM issues they all suffer from (probably suffering from).

Is this an SMG to MT conversion trans? If so, who did the work?

Nope not a SMG conversion. Its out of a euro spec m3.


As for the intake: That graph is the cross sectional area taken at slices through that early design iteration. The red line on the graph represents the area of a 120mm circle. Goals are external air, clean flow, and a smooth transition into the 200mm diameter opening of the CSL boxes. I'll probably do CFD on it though in my experience when desigining something like this that is tightly constrained I generally don't find much to improve after CFD and the actual numbers CFD puts out are useless, its just good for trends and concepts.

I have done intake stuff for miata's (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3001440) and this is much easier in a lot of ways. Also someone on NAM3 linked me to a similar design done in the for the E36 Gruppe A airbox (https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/main-forum/e46-2001-2006/274079-die-wethje-csl-airbox-prototype#post274103)

They are pulling from both the brake duct and the foglight and I want to retain the brake duct and keep the design more street car friendly with less triming . The horn bracket tab will need to be trimmed and on my euro headlights I am trimming the plastic headlight pin like this:

I also don't love they way they are transitioning the air through the system. I don't like corners, cavities, and sudden changes in area/volume. That's inviting turbulence.

The foglight opening itself has more than enough area and I don't think necking down from 200mm to about 120mm will cause restriction. My guess is that the CSL box has the extra large opening in order to keep air efficiently organized as it enters the large panel filter and so long as the transition is made gently it will work well.

I'm also curious if the reflection waves in the plenum actually makes it through an air filter or if from a resonance/reflection wave tuning standpoint the plenum effectively ends at the filter. It's possible some torque would be gained somewhere if the filter is at all transparent to the pressure pulses but I doubt it is.

Love it. I respect the CAD work and research. How are you planning on mounting it?

I have this now which redirects air to a 4" dry filter connected to a tube to a 4" MAF then a bimmerworld elbow into an OEM air plenum. It uses a couple M8 fasteners threaded on the back side though the bumper to hold it.

I've seen some of Erik Eriksson's stuff on Facebook, actually. I just need something to blow ambient air into the opening of the Turner box. I think his tube isn't solid, so without attaching it to the box it wouldn't work for my needs?

I love his stuff though!

I have seen that. I think that design leaves a lot on the table. Ram air is not the goal and the effect size is so small that it isn't relevant. External air efficiently fed into the rest of the intake system is the priority. Corrugated hose is fine for brake ducting where a tradeoff in flow for easy routing is worth it but a non starter for intake air. There is a huge turbulent layer around the corrugations and you end up with a smaller functional intake air diameter where air can actually move. I believe that part uses a roughly 100mm inlet which might be fine but there is more available to be used. Also squishing a circular hose/duct down into oval shapes to pass it through tight spaces reduces the cross section and bending corrugated hose is going to give poor bend geometry for flow.

I've been thinking that if you did the fog light, kept that first E36 bit from in front of the rad TO the airbox, and then routed the alternator intake over to the airbox (probably UNDER the rad hose), the three of those would provide enough ambient air you could seal it up and keep out the hot engine bay air.

Though Golgo, your setup may be tough to beat from a flow and temps perspective.

I bought a rogue e46 M3 DSSR with my other shifter parts hoping it would be close enough in size for a simple cut and reweld but probably not a good option. A friend is going to machine a similar design: Adjustable tension, same hardware, etc, but that fits this. Does anyone else have an interest in a DSSR for a ZF6 speed swap?

Also, I don't remember how I got the pilot bearing out. I half think I just left it in there, because the pilot bearing for the GS6 is in the flywheel.

But if I DID get it out, I just rented a puller from O'Reilly's.

I have one of these but I used it with my S52, not sure about S54

I have a DSSR I need to sell, it's a CAE adjustable actually. For my car, I just used an AKG one which was just a machined piece of aluminum.

He's talking about the GS6-37BZ if I'm not mistaken, out of an E46 330 or maybe a Z4.

Center to center the pins need to be 96.5mm apart in an E36.

[Edit] Weird, that image didn't come up on my phone. So yes, the shortest one would be perfect. But also, man, that's a lot of money. That's going to be $300 after shipping from Europe.

I have talked to Garagistic about shortening their E46 330 DSSR (https://www.garagistic.com/products/e46-330i-ci-dssr-selector-rod-25117523847), but they told me they're too busy at the moment to take on custom projects. I pointed out that there are more and more people doing this swap, but they weren't interested in it when I talked to them last year.

I'm not sure it needs to bend. My factory selector rod did have a bend in it, and I see them both ways to clear the giubo, but at least in the case of the GS6 in an e36, the bottom of your lever in neutral is directly above the giubo, so the rod is never any closer than the bottom of the shift lever, so it shouldn't need a bend. But most everything seems to have a bend in it.

I poked around on Garagistic's site a little more this afternoon, and the E90 DSSR is actually really short. It's 85 mm, which is actually 10 mm too short. However, the E30 selector joint is 10 mm longer than the newer joint used on the e36, E46, and everything newer, and so if you pair the 85mm E9X DSSR with that 26 mm E30 joint, the length should be perfect. This solution also is a quite a bit cheaper than the CAE route. I'm actually going to order this stuff tomorrow and we'll see how it works. I'll report back once I get it installed.

Theirs (Garagistic) looks pretty good to me. Instead of delrin it's got a pair of bearings so you can cinch the DSSR down really tight.

They also have an offset one, which could help if you're making contact with the giubo, but that one A) looka like it is just a modified stock one, so it has a delrin lined hole, and B) is also out of stock. Which makes me think they may not sell enough to keep them around.

But I gotta say, the autosolutions stuff looks and sounds pretty nice.

Rifle bolt they say? I've spent a lot of time making the rest of my car feel like that.

He's talking about the GS6-37BZ if I'm not mistaken, out of an E46 330 or maybe a Z4.

Center to center the pins need to be 96.5mm apart in an E36.

[Edit] Weird, that image didn't come up on my phone. So yes, the shortest one would be perfect. But also, man, that's a lot of money. That's going to be $300 after shipping from Europe.

I have talked to Garagistic about shortening their E46 330 DSSR (https://www.garagistic.com/products/e46-330i-ci-dssr-selector-rod-25117523847), but they told me they're too busy at the moment to take on custom projects. I pointed out that there are more and more people doing this swap, but they weren't interested in it when I talked to them last year.

Hey, I never said they were cheap! But at least they exist.

You'd be paying the price of some thorough German engineering, and for the adjustable length feature that effectively allows for tailoring the fore/aft position of the gearshift knob as installed. As it happens that last is a feature I could use, but I confess to not having been able to make myself cough up that much to get it. Yet...

Note that the online prices include ~20% VAT, which you wouldn't have to pay for export. That'd more than cover DHL shipment, so maybe $270 delivered to the USA? That might not be more expensive than a custom solution — if you can even get someone to do that. (Edit to add: I see that when Garagistic offered a custom DSSR, which they no longer do, its cost was $247.50. So maybe that CAE part isn't as expensive as all that.)

Some updates. Been doing a few things on this in the background while busy with work. First off some 3d scans of the underside for planning a future 3.5" single exit exhaust:

I pulled the ZF from my E46 and got it cleaned up:

Made a DSSR from the garagistic kit. This is my first time doing anything with tig. I need a bigger cup, the #6 that came with the torch isn't giving good coverage.

And here is the pile of parts I have gone with. New rogue shifter, reboot engineering conversion bracket and shift carrier. Clutchmasters kit with steel flywheel, and then some fresh rubber, gaskets, and bolts.

I don't know if we talked about this, but I love Clutchmaster's Stage 2 Kevlar clutch. I hated their stage 1 clutch, but the kevlar clutch is seriously great for both street and track.

UPDATE:
I was going to start dressing the ZF 6 speed to install and discovered I actually have an e46 diesel 6 speed Part number "1053 401 151"

This was what was in the late 03 330i I had been driving and the previous owner must have swapped it out. Now im looking around for a good gs6-37

There are people who like those better because of the gearing, though to me the first couple gears look REALLY short. But hopefully that means you're able to sell that relatively easily.

I got it really nicely cleaned up. New clutch installed, happy days. I went to install it yesterday and discovered I have what I believe is the GS6-37BZ — TJEP out of a n52 car. The bellhousing bolts don't all align, im missing the starter dowel, and the bellhousing part stamping 1069 401 065

I'm having a hard time finding a good gs6 that will work. Car-part.com has a few in the southeast no pictures or condition details and several of the transmissions on there that do have pictures are the same wrong gearbox labeled for the wrong year car.

I had an emergency bench press rep trying to install the gearbox using the HF floor jack so I modified it to bolt into the transmission. I also swapped out the casters and got it low enough I can roll it right under the engine without it touch while keeping it all bolted down and level. A huge quality of life improvement doing the trans install by myself:

What DEI insulation product you used? do you have any pics of how it looks like leading up to the firewall/above where the headers enter the transmission tunnel? So far it looks like a nice solution to the degrading ones on our aged stock ones

interesting. did you actually use the adhesive backing or did you secure it with some other fastners onto the tunnel?

It's a good adhesive. DEI stuff has never failed me but I haven't used this product before. I prepped the tunnel with a wash, followed by a isopropyl wipe down and a full drying. I used their seam tape on the edges to cover the white fiberglass edge but that's just cosmetic .The foil face is relatively stiff since it is aluminum. The piece can't drape or droop easily and would need to come off as a unit. You could also use some of the factory retainers if you wanted a fail safe.

Picked up a new gs6-37bz last night. Drained it today and its more glittery than I had hoped with some bigger chunks. It needs at least a selector rod seal but probably an output shaft seal and overall looks a little more haggard than I had hopes. Does anyone know if the gearbox side of the internals are the same and I could swap bellhousings between a gs6-37bz THEG and a gs6-37bz TJEP (n52 version)?

I'm looking around for a service manual for this transmission or possibly its in a ZHP/late 330i repair manual. Anyone know the torque spec on the big nut that hold the output flange? Is there a specific torquing procedure like some of the other BMW boxes?

I haven't had to redo mine yet, but those specs are hard to find (recalling doing it on the 5 speed).

And you're right - they're super hard to find for anything like a reasonable price. I blew my diff on Thursday night, but until I got it home and up in the air I thought it was the trans (the LSD didn't fail, just either the ring gear or the pinion, so my roadside diagnosis was off). Anyway, in that couple hour interim I couldn't find hardly anything that wasn't $1500+shipping. I did find a good one from a local shop here in Austin for $1300, but it was gone by the next morning. So that does seem to be the going rate for them. And yeah, the N52 issue popped up several times in that search.

Also glad that the selector rod seal was easy to remove. The first time attempting a very small seal on an expensive part always stresses me out a little. Tapped a small screwdriver into one side which pushed the other side of the seal up. Then grabbed that with another small screwdriver.

Intake prototype parts for section 1 and section 2. This feeds my AFE intake nicely. The plan is to have section 3 be CSL box specific. The print failed near the top but still usable to test fitting. It was never going to be an end use part since its just printed in petg-gf

One challenge I need to solve: The engine will move and there isn't a ton of ability for all of this to flex. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get some flexibility into the design without having to resort to anything that flows really badly like a corrugated hose. Open to a few ideas including wrapping and forming a custom shaped silicone hose/coupler, making longer slip fit joints between each piece, and keeping the middle section printed or made out of something with more ability to deform (polypropylene is a bitch to print but would work).

Have you consider the euro s50 snorkel? It feeds from brake duct and nose panel. You won’t connect directly to the csl airbox since it was designed to mate to the stock m50/s50 airbox but at the very least you would have a path of cold air into the area of the csl box inlet.

I would rather have an efficient duct flowing directly into the engine. There is room (just barely) for well designed inlet duct to pull air cleanly from outside the car. No mixing with engine bay air, no turbulent flow from sharp turns, quick transitions, or corrugated hose. Also if you squish a round hose into an ellipse you haven't maintained even cross section and there is not an open 120mm circle of space available through this area. 120mm circular area is what I'm trying to stay as close to as possible. It's slightly more area than all 6 throttle bodies added together.
