View Full Version : BMW E39 540iA 1996 - syncing new key clicks but still not unlocking car

I bought 3 keys from different sellers (so cheap) from Ebay (1996-2003) BMW E39 key fob upgrade retrofit so got the 4keys one with a red ring led under bmw-logo.
Fine i thought so i went to the locksmith. They couldn't figure out why my bought Ebay keys wont work. But said they had black diamond keys in stock. So they programmed that for me so i have 3 keys (2 oem + diamond black new).
But plan from start was to have the "BMW 4 Button OEM Smart Key red bmw-logo ring" since i like that one more.. :lol Problem i get with these 4 button keys is i get the central-lock unlock clicking when i sync
them. But the keyfob does not signal car correctly somehow. Anyone have a clue why that could be the sync works, but unlock/lock not working. :embarrasm Same when locksmith shop tried. They said signal is sending from the 4 Buttom keys but the car is not accepting the signal somehow. But their diamond key worked just fine which also is aftermarket.
Key is: HU58 blade, 433MHz + ID44 / PCF7935 chip
Car: BMW 540iA 1996/6 , EU/German Import
VIN: WBADE61060BU81216
Does anyone know if there should be something else than than
ignition position 1 then remove oem key, sync by pressing unlock + lock 3 times then releasing. With 4 Button keys and diamond key i had to press unlock + spam lock about 5 - 10 times untill i heard the locking sequence inside the car.
What 4 button, all e39s have 3 button, diamond and non diamond keys, some have 2 but not 4.
Post a picture with the key.
I have the f10 style flip key, and the alarm button doesn't do anything. It was specified in the seller's ad where I bought the key. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240625/7d800225934e93ed88f39bf92608b2d2.jpg

Sorry for not clarifying better what keys i meant. Yes the ones i am trying to program to my E39 car is this on your image (Flip 4 button key fob) with 433MHz + ID44 / PCF7935 chip. If im correct the actual black little chip only talks with the car EWS system. So when i sync the keys by using the method in thread, my car responds to all keys with the locking+unlocking click after key sync in order. all keys works except this flip key im trying to sync....
I have 3 flip 4 button keys from different sellers since they were pretty cheap. And wanted to make sure the first one didnt have a bad transmitter. But since all keys talks with the car when programming/syncing, i thought that shouldnt be the issue here.
Anyone have any ideas? What i have is this
2 x OEM keys the square one with large lock button and two buttons below and a red indicator = works by syncing first using Ignition in 1st position, turn off, 5 seconds and start holding then tapping 3 times
1 x diamond shape newer black key = syncs perfect by holding and tapping 5-10 times
3 x Flip 4button keys = syncs perfect by holding and tapping also 5 - 10 times. But only problem is they dont actually work after the process.
I tried syncing only 1 OEM key, then 1 Flip 4-button key and still same issue. The locking/unlocking sync completes for both and only the oem key works.
You need to press only 3 times and do that on every key that you want synced, immediately after you did the first one.
Just for reference, do only one flip key, to see if it works. Replace the battery before with a new one.
The original diamond keys have rechargeable battery that you can recharge on a toothbrush charger.
Mine are 25 years old, and I still get 50m range out of them, but I recharge the periodically to keep them alive as I don't use them.

I tried, but how matter i try the flip keys dont make my car do anythin unless i hit it 5-10 times instead of 3. Then i hear the locking mechanism (key sync stage). So the car and the flip key clearly talks to eachother.
But no matter what it still wont lock or unlock the car after im done.
Also did what you said only syncing my 1 OEM key followed by the flip key. If i do all keys the only keys actually unlocking/locking the car when im done with the key sync is my OEM keys and blacksmith diamond shaped key.
Tried with all 3 flip keys i have. They all need 5-10 taps when holding the other button before car reacts. But after they dont do anything at all when pressing the lock or unlock buttons.
Tried google this weird behaviour but can't find anything related to this. Anyone have any theories? If i cant solve this im stuck with having to adjust my preference liking to the diamond shaped key.
The flip knife is OEM F-Chassi Key Fob (4-button) flip key. And the diamond shape key is "New Gates Key Fob" in black.
I got my keys from eBay 6 years ago. Still working today
Can look up the item and seller. If he's still available, you can text him and tell him the country and manufacture year, and he'll send the right fobs, blade, and frequency wise.

Thanks taz would be very appreciated. Odd though the keys respond to car key initialize, but then dont locks or unlocks. But we hope your contact have better transmitters for my car.
Stay away from Aliexpress sellers everyone, lol..

Do read the item description carefully and try to contact him for any details if needed.
I'm not affiliated, I just had good experience with his product, that's all.
Probably, others sell the same ones as him. It's made in China nonetheless.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240629/96d27403af167e447c0a2f816abdcfed.jpg

Im alittle bit sketched to buying the same chip once again. But i found this ad recently also
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314245852778
stating:
1996-2003 BMW 5 Series (E39)
pls confirm your fcc id is KR55WK47993 ,if your fcc id is LX8FZV it willnot work.
PCF7946
So a difference in chip reference and also some FCC info. Im gonna go to a friend tonight and open one of my OEM keys and check what it says on the chip of the original keys. And also maybe open the diamond shaped black new fob (the one who works)
and compare to my 3pieces of F-key flip knife fob's i have. Maybe we'll find some relevant information. I'll send him a PM on Ebay to see what he have to say :)
Thanks taz.

Thanks taz.The chip has nothing to do with the remote lock/unlock.
The chip talks to the ews module, the remote talks to the GM module, 2 different components.
They live in the same case( key ) but are not related.
