Hi. I have searched tons and have a pretty good idea on the topic. However, I still have some doubts on the fit of the SMF in my E34 M30B35.

My E34 535i is from 12/1989 and I feel by DMF is going, and before it gets undriveable, I am preparing myself to switch to SMF little by little.

So, I have read tons and many threads on the subject but I am still missing 2 main things. : About the spacer going into the flywheel itself and the clutch kit to be used.

So, I got the SMF with reference number : 11 22 1 271 463 ( the 16lbs one I believe). The issue is that I got the flywheel thru Internet from a scrapyard and the part was a standalone part, so I have no reference at all from the car or production date it came from.

So, at this stage, based on REALOEM, these are my findings ( Based on the E28 533i, European 635i and M5 ( USA or EUR )) as I know it was fitted in much more models.

So, For the 533i, from REALOEM, this Flywheel was mounted from Production Date 07/1982 ( when it was launched) until 01/1984, after which, a DMF was fitted.
However, since I have read that the clutch must be from the car the flywheel is from, based on REALOEM as well, I found the following:
BMW Ref: 21219069010 for the clutch KIT for the 533i model UNTIL 09/1983
BMW Ref: 21219069012 for the clutch KIT for the 533i model FROM 09/1983

So, because I don´t know the prod date of the car the flywheel came off, I am finding an overlap between the Flywheel and cutches as the Flywheel ( SMF) is fitted in the 533i between 07/1982 and 01/1984, but the 21219069010 Ref goes until 09/1983…… So, what if the car the flywheel came off is from a prod date between 09/1983 and 12/1983?

However, the fitment on 635CSI models for the same flywheel is from 09/1980 and 01/1984, but for this model, clutch reference is 21219069012.

So what is the Reference for the clutch I should be looking for? I also saw about the M5/M6 clutch Ref: 21212226428, which seems to be also compatible ( but not sure).

Then, there is the spacer, which I believe my car ( with the Dual mass) does not have, and I have read that I need it, but not too sure….So, Do I need the spacer ( Ref 11221262827) to be able to fit the flywheel to my M30 B34?

And last, as a comment ( mainly on the clutch ), is that I am looking for the most comfortable usage….So, not at all looking for a drift or track car…on the contrary, I want the daily driving experience to be as standard and smooth as possible.

I have also read about the "while I am in there" stuff on seals, shifter linkeage, etc. Good information on this out there.

Thanks

You're going to need new flywheel bolts (11227805885) as these are shorter that the ones for the DMF. From what I read before, it's best to use the shim/spacer (11221262827) as it will distribute the load/tension evenly across the surface of the flywheel. Also you might also need new pressure plate bolts (07129903984) they might be different from the ones for a DMF, maybe you could do some additional cross-referencing on realoem. For the clutch kit, what I have is an E28 M5 clutch kit for my E34, and a E28 535i kit on my E32. Strangely the M5 clutch kit has a lighter pedal feel than the 535i. Basically, any clutch kit from E28 and below or E24 633i will work as long as the clutch plate has springs.

Tons of clutch kits work on the single mass flywheels. I also have a 16lb one with a e24 m635csi resurfaced pressure plate but a 733i e23 disc on my m30b35. You should be able to use any clutch kit for a single mass car with the sprung hub. You'll need the little washer spacer under the bolt heads to distribute the load.

Thanks a lot guys. Really appeciate.
So, as a "simple" conclusion, both clutch kits either from the 533i up to 09/1983 or 635i will do....Even if they share different ref. numbers, I am guessing they are basically the same.... And as a last question, what about the M5/M6 clutch? Being different than those of the 533i/635i, should I speculate that is more "rigid" or les comfortable, even though I read that it is actually ( or may be ) softer...... It that so? So, in all, any 533i, 635i and even M5/M6 clutch kit will do with the spacer and hardware ( thanks for the refs, by the way). Cheers

There is no comfort difference with the clutches. M5 is easy to actuate. It is rated for more HP/Torque. Buy whatever easiest to come by for you, you'll be fine.

I daily an m30 w/ e28 m5 clutch. Absolutely 0 issues, or feelings that it might not be stock. And this is paired with an 8.5 lb flywheel....

All my g260 and single mass cars have significantly lighter clutch pedals than my 525i that still has a dual mass and stock clutch.
