Hello all. New here and happy to see such an active forum. I just picked up a ‘92 525i in decent shape and I’m looking forward to bringing it up to top notch condition.

The auto transmission is slipping in first gear. Was considering changing the solenoids, but have the opportunity to get a transmission out of a 94. The model on the 94 is MX 96017187. I understand that with a different model year tranny it’s required to have the correct TCM as well. I’ve been to realoem and can’t figure out what TCM is required.

Greatly appreciated if anyone can direct me to the correct part number.

Thanks.

that doesn't correspond to a bmw part number. check the trans against the one from 94 in realoem. a crappy auto trans is a great opportunity to upgrade to a 5spd. a manual makes for twice the car compared to the auto.

a manual makes for twice the car compared to the auto.

This.

There are plenty of 5-speeds that fit, but for a bit more work, a 6-speed is possible as well. See link in my sig for details of a GS6-37BZ swap.

The 5-speed is definitely on the horizon, but for now I need to get the car going. For the 92 realoem states this

If the 94 will mate up to my 92, then I’ve got no issue with swapping out the TCM to make it work, but it’s difficult translating the parts numbers differences across the years for essentially the same vehicle.
