I just changed the really gross recirculating filters on my E38 which I'd forgotten about for a long time...
(Not the underhood ones, I know about those) ;) Then I started thinking about my '97 540i too.

The E39 has easy-to-change cabin intake filters under the hood, of course.

But does my E39 also have the recirculating filters or not? :confused

Is there a DIY on changing them (it was a moderate PITA on the E38 with a larger interior)... I haven't turned anything up searching. :help Thanks!

These are the really dirty recirc filters from my E38, they are only about 6" long:

I don't know how you searched, but it took 30" since I read your post to find this tutorial.

The e39 does not have them.

Do you get extra points for being a smart-ass?

Thank you.
