Has anybody had success in maintaining steering wheel button function after changing their steering wheel, but with the Avin head unit?

I'm trying to go from the boat steering wheel to an M sport wheel and I already have my Avant4 in and working for months. I got a used wheel off of eBay with airbag, but the steering wheel buttons did not function. It might've been the wheel, but it might've been incompatibility with the head unit. Any tips appreciated!

What year is your car?
Your original buttons have to work with the android unit, regardless of the shape of the steering wheel.
Prior to 6/96, they used a module to communicate with the buttons. After that, they included the module in the right side steering buttons stack.
After 2/99, they switched to dual stage airbags and changed the slip ring and mounting.
The car communicates with the android HU via a canbus decoder provided by the HU.
So if yours previously worked, that means that you got an incompatible or broken button steering wheel.
Mine works fine, and I switched from regular 4 spokes to the M5 steering wheel. Mine is 00 model year( 12/99 prod date)
I have an Xtrons android HU.

If you still have your old stereo, it might help to put that back in to test if the steering wheel buttons work with that to test whether the SWBs themselves are functional.

Car is an 03, everything works fine already with the stock 4-spoke wheel. I got a later (02+) sport 3-spoke wheel from another 5 series and it didn't seem to work with the Avin headunit, so I had to assume something was broken internally and I returned the wheel. Before I try this again I want to make sure that I'm not locked into keeping the 4 spoke wheel for some reason. Avin's customer support was of no help and couldn't even understand what I was asking. The head unit is coded to one's particular VIN but I don't think there's a coding difference between 3 spoke and 4 spoke, right? I'm talking same year compatibility. Imagine a 2003 4-spoke wheel and a 2003 3-spoke wheel.

There is no such thing as coded to the vin. If you have the Ibus interface, then you'll have a license for that interface on your vin, but it's not related to the steering wheel.
I don't know why you even bother with customer service. They have no idea how these HU operate or anything related. They are just muppets pretending to be "professionals".

You are not locked on the 4 spoke.
My car is a 12.99 prod date and my steering wheel is a 04 e46 M steering wheel.
You were just unlucky enough to get a bad steering wheel.
