I recently replaced my glow plugs and found some Beru replacements on discount via rockauto. After replacing, I get a CEL about the glow plug module. My dealer did a scan and said something about the module needing to be programmed to use the non Bosch plugs. Is this a thing? How would I program the module to use non Bosch plugs?
Anybody else run in this issue?
I have since thing just bought some Bosch plugs but would rather not replace unless I have to. The Beru plugs do seem to work despite the CEL.

Yes, the glow plugs should be installed with the same kind.
Now the bigger question is, why change them in the first place? Did they throw codes before?
These engines hardly ever use the glow plugs on starting.

Preventive maintainence was the reason so they don't get stuck in there and snap off later. Looks like it was a waste of time unfortunately. Kinda just a routine for me since I also have a dodge sprinter and 2000 Jetta Tdi.

Ah I see.
I wouldn't disturb the originals, nor touch the original threads at all. That's what will cause worn threads or snapped glow plugs, once the originals were replaced and not installed with the correct paste/grease or torqued wrong, etc.
We have 4x N47 in the family and none of them needed them yet. Mine is at 158k miles and running very nicely. I am not going to disturb those glow plug threads unless absolutely necessary.
It's unusual to say, but it doesn't seem these engines consume the glow plugs as much as other diesels with similar setups.

You can use BERU or BOSCH, you cannot mix them (ie:3 Beru 1 Bosch).
You must activate the security data record in the pre heating unit before replacement to prevent damage to the fitted glow plugs due to excess current.
After replacement you carry out the glow plug determination, at this time the preheating control unit determines the fitted glow plugs.
The OE Bosh units are about $20.00 each 0 250 603 006 (12 23 0 035 934) from FCP.
Firstly carry out the safety data record glow plug determination in ISTA and if it runs without fault you will be fine.
If the ABL fails then you will need to activate the safety data record, replace the glow plugs again then run the glow plug determination.
