Resto Mod Race Build - Rogue Fab's 1972 BMW 2002 Race E10

I have decided to build a pretty wild BMW 2002 (https://www.bmw2002faq.com/models/bmw-2002-r11/). We are starting with a not super clean 1972 (non Tii) model. Car had likely rolled the ODO once, as the seats/pedals/steering wheel showed very little wear for a 2xx,xxx mile car. Looked more like 1xx,xxx to me.

We picked up our 2002 for $1500. It was a super lucky Craigslist find, and as only an hour away. The rust is a little heavy in the driver's floor and driver's rocker, but the battery area is surprisingly clean. We will be repairing all the rust of course. This car had been in a few fender benders and had a LOT of lead and bondo nearly everywhere (the hood is incredibly clean, as is the roof).

Build Details released so far:
Body/Chassis: 1972 BMW 2002 (https://www.bmw2002faq.com/models/bmw-2002-r11/) - This will be a widebody build
Suspension: E46 based subframes and arms
Coilovers: JRZ RS-2 coilovers from a 2019 BMW M4 (F82 chassis)
Braking system: 4 piston forged monoblock Brembo calipers on all 4 corners. 345mm(13.6")/336mm(13.2") rotors.
Engine: 2009 N54 (twin turbo), lightly tuned for ~400 wheel HP.
Transmission: BMW GS6-58 (E9x 6 speed manual)
Differential: TBA, but it will be a VERY bulletproof LSD not made by BMW (likely episode 4 or 5)
Roll Cage: We will be designing and fabricating a very safe cage with Docol-R8 tube. It will be mandrel bent and TIG welded in house.
Target budget: $10,000 goal all-in including safety equipment and vehicle purchase!

Here is our $1500 BMW 2002 and our Donor 2009 N54 (Twin Turbo ~350HP 3.0, which will be tuned to 400+). We are NOT going to modify the top of the hood or have a tall car. We will make a post about the donor car in a little bit.

The car is mostly stripped of paint and we have done a lot of minor body work on the upper rear-quarters and removed a TON of lead and Bondo body fillers. We have already sold the engine once we got it running. We have video of the process. We sold $4983 in parts off of the car, giving us plenty of cash to buy some expensive parts, like a fuel cell, Docol R8 for the roll cage we're going to design and build, and race seats.

We actually bought a suspension donor before we got the 2002... One of my employees found this relatively clean 2001 325i (other than moldy interior and broken forward shift solenoid or pin/keyway/clutch) for $500. It ran smooth and was accident free. All we wanted from it was front and rear subframes and suspension. We sold the rest of the parts and recycled the shell and got $2105 from it all. This included the stock cats.

Here is the LAST car we bought to pull this off... 2009 E93 (335i Hardtop Convertible) with 57k miles and a clean title. Decked out with nearly every option, not that it matters. Had full grain leather, M performance pkg, 2nd best of many stereo options, heated steering wheel, optional I-drive, park sensors, adaptive xenon headlights, adaptive cruise, etc. Picked it up for $3500 after we jump started it to make sure it still ran.

This is an automatic car, and we WILL be finding a 6 speed BS6-58 for our BMW 2002 (the wicked tough 6 speed that goes behind an N54).

It was too tempting to get the engine test fit with the crossmember, so we did a very hasty test-fit without mounts prepared. It fits better than we deserve.

EPISODE 2.5: Primer weekend. We had to get the sheet metal protected from flash rust! After this we will be working on getting our front subframe moved UP relative to the frame... otherwise this car is going to have trash for suspension geometry at ride height! See episode 2 for more info on why this is needed.

We finally have the front suspension settled in it's "happy place". No more poor control arm geometry at a good ride height. Many engine swapped 2002's I see are super tall and goofy looking. This one won't be!

I plan to look at them as well. Have a 75 that I’d like to put back together. Am torn between rebuilding and turbocharging the M10 and adding aftermarket fuel injection or going an engine swap. The I6 motors require firewall and trans tunnel work. I did read about a N54 swap in a car magazine years ago. A compact V6 or I4 might be the better choice for me since I won’t be going all out on this car and it won’t be a track car (have a 700+ rwhp turbo E36 M3 and know what too much power in a small car is like).
