So looking at the 2 ECUs below, the bottom one came out of my car, a e36 320i (euro) and the top one i bought off ebay.
When I plug in the top one the ignition comes on faintly without the key even being in. Does motronic vs DME mean much?

DME and Motronic are the same, DME is German for Digitale Motor Elektronik. In German language the also use sometimes MOTORSTEUERGERÄT = ECU = electronic control unit. Motronic is the trade name given to a range of digital engine control units developed by Bosch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motronic
These Motronic units were used in many cars, most important is the Bosch number and on both of your units it is the same 0 261 200 402 . And even the BMW numbers on the other sticker are same.
I assume the one you bought might be defective? Often transistors are the problems, here a typical repair on another DME http://www.e38.org/e28/louielouie/dme_fix.html

Yeah I'm actually a bit annoyed now, so I have a mechanic helping me and below the passenger side there was a rusted ground (it affected ignition) so he was using a jumper cable to ground it while we worked, so the other day he came and did some stuff (tried scanning the original ecu etc) and i told him to fix the ground properly and stop wasting time hooking it up everytime, so i just went to take a pic to show you and do an ebay refund and it’s not doing it anymore and the ignition works 100% now wtf and I already ordered a new DME lmao -.- so I’m thinking the ground was messing with it maybe? not sure we'll see.
One other question, what's this module that’s up under to the side of the glove box?

all modules and relays are shown in pictures in the wiring diagrams under component locations views, including the name, the item number http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm
that is almost at the end of the hundreds of pages of wiring diagrams, component location charts and views
