View Full Version : E36 Exhaust options?

Debating various M3 exhaust options. Don’t want the car to be obnoxiously loud, 100% certain of that. It’s hard to tell however how loud a setup is
based off of videos and forum posts.

I’d say if 0 is quiet and 10 is loud, I’d want to be at 6.5-7, if stock exhaust is at 4.

Conclusion I came to from watching videos of various exhaust setups is that the stock resonator on these cars takes away from the rasp too much at the top end, however again it is hard to tell. Even full AA/Supersprint (resonated/catback) setups sound way too tame, from what I’ve looked at.

What do y’all think about a ‘headers - xpipe - Aa muffler setup ? How loud would that make the car ?

The other option I liked the sound of is the Dinan muffler

Two videos of similar setups:

Had a dinan exhaust once. It sounds way too echo-y and open for me if that makes sense. The second video kind of captures it.

I'm biased cause I had a stromung and I loved it. It was a tight and deep tone and kept the stock notes and was just a little loud. Plus it's way cheaper than most exhausts out there for what people compare them to.

The staggered tips and internal mesh in the tips also makes them look better, but it still looks stock.

I want the exhaust note to be a focused, sharp rasp that gets loud at the top but isn’t too audible at the bottom end of the RPM’s. Like if an exhaust note was a katana or something

Some sort of res delete midpipe @ muffler should be good for starters correct? Isn’t the resonator what basically quiets the rasp part of the exhaust note down or am I completely wrong?

I would just hate , hate hate hate to make it sound too loud and like a straight piped 2v

This is the best sounding E36M3 I found so far:

Believe G-Power doesn’t even sell anything for the E36M anymore, what a shame.. Id pay extra for this muffler

Superprint res del. xpipe Is definitely going to be a part of my exhaust setup, thumbs up on that one

You realize the car in this video has a totally different motor, right?

I had the Strömung too 8-10 years ago with stock headers/midpipe.

After that I got an Eisenmann Race. The first one was filmed literally right when I installed it. Hadn't even gotten it out of the garage. The 83mm tips look very nice.

Later I put on an AA track pipe and eventually AA headers after I sheared off enough studs on the stock headers. I think adding the longtube headers made it quieter. I started messing around with RomRaider several years ago.

The Strömung set off car alarms occasionally. It had a deeper bass and sounded more or less the same despite how much pedal you put down. The Eisenmann sounds by far more refined and distinct throughout the RPMs, much quieter at the low end compared to WoT, so that has its advantages on public roads.

Strömung is hella cheap in comparison though.

I miss setting off alarms in the garage back in the day.

I just ordered a stromung for my recent m3 pick up. Second stromung. And they offer 5% military discount

Says 3.0 in the desc. Isn’t that just the S50? Regardless, it’s hard to tell due to how different these cars sound with various exhaust options

SS xpipe + SS race exhaust Seems to be the closest to what I’m looking for. Mix and match I bet is a hassle when it comes to fitment so I’m just gonna go with this. Not too expensive either, just over a thousand for both when AA is 900 just for the muffler alone.

Love how this car is coming together esp w/ the LTW wing coming in. Waiting impatiently on it to get here..

I have run the AA muffler and it sounds exactly like the car in the video. It's a really great piece of exhaust. But you gotta pay to play.

Are exhaust options completely different between the euro S50 powered M3 and the American M3? Or is the difference just in headers ?
