Been dealing with a bogging at 3k on my car, recently did VANOS and some other things but, I want to find a good e36 mechanic in LA if I can’t figure this out.

Where do you take your E36 to in LA?

Did you have this issue before the vanos job?

Yeah I did, I assumed it was the VANOS due to the weird loss of power/shudder starting at 3k, but even after throwing the DrVanos piece on, still no luck.

When I was driving around today I kept trying to see when the shudder would happen, I would floor it and it started to loose power at about 2600 and starts the weird noise and stays at 3k. Most of the time it would hesitate and then the Vanos would kick in and it would continue up the power band, but before I parked it I punched it again and it misfired at 3k and the check engine light flashed for a couple seconds... This is my thinking on why its fuel, or maybe spark, and maybe a vacuum leak, but I did most of the vacuum lines + icv last year, so I'm not quite sure. Vanos Solenoid might be a cheap enough fix too?

Digging deep into The OFFICIAL bogging, hesitating, no acceleration from idle thread (https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?407255-The-OFFICIAL-bogging-hesitating-no-acceleration-from-idle-thread/page11) but only a couple peoples issues align with mine.

Starting first by ordering new Spark Plugs + Fuel Filter and will go from there.

Just don't buy new China injectors, they will leak.

You could have leaking injectors, get a bottle of royal purple complete fuel system cleaner with good gas. You could have weak/shorting coils, if they're old or original they need to be replaced only buy new. You could have a clogged cat, do not buy new cats, let the Royal purple do its job, if things improve run another bottle.

Believe it or not just yesterday I had cell flashes, the only problem I found in inpa was -10 long term fuel trims on both banks. Haven't used fuel system cleaner in a long time so I put a bottle and cleared adaptations. Probably will put new coils and have been putting off a VCG job where I bandaded it.

If your pre cat oxygen sensor is old you should replace it, a lot of m50 people have had a driveability issue related to it.

Will start with Royal Purple, and O2 sensor, Fuel injectors after that if there’s no improvement. Will 100% get new coils cause I have original ones.

I would put new coils before injectors. So there's an updated Bosch injector design not so sure how well they work on the m50 though. You would need to find out if the DME can compensate without a tune or just resetting adaptations.

Hoping I can just drop these in and not retune https://www.ecstuning.com/b-bavarian-autosport-parts/bavarian-autosport-high-performance-ignition-coil-single-coil/5003~bav/

While I wait for them to come in going to do Royal purple and Fuel Filter, thank you again for the help Eric

@Eric93se (https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/member.php?279868-Eric93se), ended up being the crankshaft position sensor.

Couple months back I replaced the stock one with some low quality rock auto part (learned my lesson now, fcp for life <3), and that ended up being what was causing the bogging.

Thanks for your help, my fuel system is probably really clean now with all the royal purple I ran through it.

That's great!

What made you suspect the cam sensor? Obd1 has terrible diagnostics.

Really annoying how the market is flooded with cheap sensors that aren't up to spec.

Did you get new coils, car will run better.

No new coils, but is next on my list once I get paid after an oil change!

Honestly was just pissed and stared at my car for a good half hour trying to remember what I had done recently and then remembered that I put on crappy aftermarket crankshaft sensor from rock auto. It was like the cleanest part of my car car so it reminded me that I replaced it when trying to diagnose a different non starting issue

But yeah I put on the stock one, the bogging has stopped and the car runs great! Time to get back to the preventative maintenance. Decided to finally get an FCP oil change kit, excited to never pay for another oil change again!

Thanks again for your help, if you’re ever in the LA area and want a beer it’s on me!
