Hello Everyone.

Yesterday afternoon, I was driving my 2016 428xi (101K miles), had just made a right turn, and tried to accelerate. I'm not an expert, but it felt to me like the tranny wouldn't shift up to the next gear and when I pressed on the accelerator, it wouldn't go faster than about 25mph. I then noticed that the DSC warning light was on (in yellow) . No triangle, no exclamation point, no textual message. As I tried to accelerate again, I could swear it turned red and then disappeared when I released the accelerator.

I pulled the car aside for a few minutes. Then I tried it again and it worked fine with no issues - I drove it for about 5 miles. I drove it again today about 25 miles. Again no issues.

There were no warning lights since that brief episode and I checked the "Check Control" and there are no warnings or faults reported there.

Any ideas on what happened and whether this is serious or not?

There will be stored codes for that event, which hopefully was a one off.

It would take a BMW capable tool to read all the stored codes it set, in multiple modules. Otherwise it's guessing

A similar thing happened with our 2014 328i. When it happened, I just shut off the engine, waited 15-30 seconds, then started again. I think it happened twice, but then it never happened again.

When it happened it also disengaged the cruise control and wouldn’t let cruise control work again until shutting the engine off. I have read of seven potential causes for it, including wheel speed sensors, DSC, and even ABS system.

I think that the Prince of Darkness, Lucas Electric, was reincarnated into a German!

Thanks for the responses. I basically did the same thing. Pulled over waited a few minutes and it was fine. It hasn't happened again. I was worried about the tranny. But my SA seems to feel that it may have just been a freak event. I did make an appt to have the computer scanned (which would provide the diagnosis) but I'm thinking about cancelling it (it's $225). I just don't want to be far from home and get stuck.

I would cancel it, especially for that price!

If you are any sort of DIY, it would be wiser to invest in a tool that can read BMW manufacturer codes from all the modules instead.

Otherwise, maybe a cheaper independent shop may help here for less.
