I'm thinking of swapping in an M52TUB28 instead of my M52TUB20.
Found two '99 2.8' with aprox same mileage( 217k and 224k km ) for the same price 800$ plus vat.
My biggest concern is that I have no place to install. My driveway is paved, and it is impossible to use a creeper , not even thinking of an engine hoist/crane.
I want to do the swap because the 150 pony M52TU is getting humiliated by those pesky VW up that Danish love, and it's kinda slow for today's standard
I barely get to 200km/h on the autobahn, and if I do, some 1.2 or 1.4 turbocharged crap goes by me or flashes me to move....
For those who have done plug and play swaps, any advice?

What's the question? It's plug and play, you can even use your existing engine harness on the 2.8 - just get a tune for the DME for the proper displacement.

M54 3.0 is about 6 wires from being able to be made to work too. Or use a 2.8 M52TU intake manifold/fuel rail on the M54B30 and it'll work like an M52TU too.

But if you don't have a place to swap the engine not sure how to help with that... it's not a hard spot, but I'd say you at least need room and a stable surface for an engine hoist.

What I was more interested in was how to physically do it. What the best and hassle free option would be.
I would prefer to just remove the entire subframe with the engine and gearbox together and not pull it from the front.
But for that I need a lift and a garage. Or just a garage
I haven't done much research on how to flash the dme, but I think it's possible to flash the 2.8 software on the 2.0 dme. I wouldn't change the dme/ews/keys/ignition/locks.
This is my garage and driveway.
I actually had to move the inner wall 50 cm so the e39 would fit to the rim.
The driveway is also as wide as the car, not a cm more.
They were made for the small danish crap cars like vw up, Suzuki Alto, Toyota aygo, Citroën c1, and not for the 5 meter behemoth that the e39 is.
To rent a lift at the only DIY shop in the capital region is about 30$/h, and there is no engine flatbed. Maybe at most, a gearbox jack.
Any ideas
