View Full Version : Fuel prices, quit bitching

Lets not get political, Okay?

Have you changed your driving style?

After hearing endless bitching about gas prices, now eased a bit, I find it remarkable how few have changed their driving style.

I needed to drive Mrs. Ross to the airport the other day via expressways. The speed limit is usually 65MPH. I travel in the center lane (to avoid those incapable of a smooth merge into traffic) unless passing or moving briskly enough that I know I won't be holding up others. Little of that briskness from me these days while consuming $5 gas.

At 70mph you'd think I was in reverse. Cars passing had to be doing 85, some more, sometimes on the right. Pretty typical behavior around here.
Do you think it occurs to them that fuel consumption goes up drastically with speed? Especially when the engine is trying to shove a gigantic brick shaped something or other through the air.
Has anyone else slowed down?

Dude, you are just getting old…. Embrace it so you can have some inner peace. I haven’t slowed down.

I cannot control the price but can control consumption so I choose to slow down. My age has nothing to do with it.
It seems absurd when folks are interviewed for a newscast at the gas pump and they cry hardship(with a much bigger and newer vehicle than my own)then turn around and drive these behemoths 90 MPH.
YES, I make the assumption that those complaining are the ones still driving fast, because seemingly everybody else is. I'm not about to begin "hyper-miling" but I feel like a rolling chicane while still exceeding the legal limit.
It was different in '73 when sometimes gas just wasn't available at any price. People had to conserve or walk.
As long as demand remains high there will be little incentive for prices to come down. I feel for the folks this really impacts.
I am fortunate to be well able to afford these new prices, it isn't any hardship for me. I'd like to do my part to reduce demand. Jousting at windmills I suppose.

What pisses me off about all this, is the fact that this was purposely created by that idiot Brandon, amongst all the other ridiculous crap going on.

As you know, I hold the record average speed on here.
Mileage is still hovering at 27mpg, down from 28.5 because of the switch to regular @ $5.19vs super $5.59.
Oh, and a lean code every once in a while.
But slow down for gas prices? No

Next weekend the BMW CCA from NM, AZ, TX, and CO are all meeting in Durango, from there we head to various destinations in CO. If my wife decides not to go I’m sure I can do OK. If she comes I’m dead in the water.
So what’s your avg speed?

There was a time when 80 was the passenger seat limit.
Then I bought her, her own 530 sport.
Now she will cruise 85-90.
And she loves the muffler delete M5.
Her car.
Mine is stock, no dog ever.
So now, no bad looks till over100.
Fastest average speeds are always in the 525 junkwagon. Under the radar, style wise, and slow car fast theory.
So a club drive might not help you.

Most of the club guys that go on these drives have a heavy foot.
A few months ago we got stuck behind 2 RV’s, when it was clear to pass I hit triple digits for 5-6 seconds, she freaked out. Said she was done going on the monthly drives until I toned it down.
I use to have the MID limit set to 80, then to 85, then 90. Now that I’m in NM where the highway speed limit is 75 I don’t use it anymore, too annoying.

Haha! She throws the yellow light. 75 mph speed limits? Over here, most would be cruising 100. All the 55 mph zones, locals are cruising 75-80, the dorks from Maryland, 90. They take advantage of the fact that we don’t really have speed cameras all over the place like they do over there. Kinda sucks, out in the Point Of Rocks, and Harpers Ferry area are some really nice driving roads, but they have those speed cameras everywhere, thank god for Waze!

Many years ago I was traveling with a woman (who I had just had a BIG argument with and wasn't speaking to me) through the Mojave on some lonesome two lane in a '71 Riviera. The Riv was in its prime so I decided to open 'er up. Normally she would have been objecting to this but since she wasn't speaking to me...
The speedo was long buried and it was still pulling when we crested a rise that put all four wheels momentarily off the ground. I thought for sure that would break the silence. It didn't but when I looked over at her staring out the side window (so as not to meet my glance) I could see the reflection of her face with a big $#*! eating grin.

Mrs. Ross used to have a lead foot. In fact whilst traveling with her near a route she often drove for business travel I was stopped for speeding and when the trooper looked in the car he recognized HER from a previous stop. She had gotten a ticket, he let me go, HA!

OK thanks.
There is some rain in the forecast, not helpful.

Ok wagons, the hotel was a 200 mile drive so we took as many back roads as we could to avoid as many towns and reservations as possible.
I reset everything when I left. It rained twice which slowed us down. Otherwise the avg speed would have been higher. Before the rain it was reading 72.4
We covered 254 miles. We had to make up time we lost in towns with more stop signs than houses on roads like these.

If anything I feel like I've gotten worse- I think I average around 10km/l

I had a little less trust in the car when prices were lower, but I've since done some good maintenance and she's in a good condition.
Can't help but put a smile on my face from time to time, and I figure these old BMW's appreciate an occasional Italian tune up lol. With the prices I definitely don't do as much spirited driving as I'd like to though.

Man, Every time I drive my cars, they get a constant Italian tune up!

If you care about gas mileage so much, you bought the wrong car. Buy a Prius if you care so much about gas mileage and keep out of the left lane.

I agree. Now with CA talking about brownouts and lack of power those EV’s will be worthless.

Right! What a bunch of stupid forward thinking (So they like to think they are), a$$ backward thinking dorks that they really are. I hope their stupid power grid crashes, that will show all those dopey electric car driving turds what they’ve gotten themselves into. But yet, you know they will still push that stupid agenda, morons.

Those dip wads will be riding bicycles when they pull their heads out of where the sun doesn’t shine.
No gas powered lawn mowers, weed wackers, cars. Let’s run everything on electricity that they don’t have enough of now.

When I drove to Vegas last time I measured the fuel consumption to be 21-22MPG. It’s usually around 16-17 when I zip around at home running errands. Had the AC on the whole time driving to Vegas which wasn’t really necessary.
