View Full Version : Koni's in Rear ONLY??? (With stocks in front)

I can tell my suspension is getting tired, especially the back. I also know my RSM's can use replacement. (Car has 37k on it) I want to do the RSM's as a priority, but while I'm back there I might as well do shocks too. Trouble is, I can't afford all 4 at the moment....or springs either. So I want to just do the RSM's and the rear shocks. I don't want stock either, because I want to drop it later. So I was thinking Koni adjustables wouldn't be too bad.

Any idea on how it might drive like that? Would I want to set the Koni's on full soft? Would the car be dangerous?

My friend did that for a little while and had no problems. His username is BlackM3Sedan.

Your tail will be a little bit loose (over steer), but significantly bad. I ran that setup before because when I purchased my set, the front shocks were on back order so I received the rear ones first. I had it that way for about 1 month with 1 auto-X and 1 DE. The back end was a little tail happy but that was only while tracking the car. Daily driving shouldn't be to bad, as long as your careful. But you should definitely purchase the front ones within a few months as well.

I ran mine for 4 months with stock struts and no problems on the street.

Cool. Thanks for the help guys. So you think full soft is the smartest way to go then until the front gets done? Also, since I'm not changing springs...can I avoid alignment until later too?

Just run at setting you like.
I ran at 1 turn from full soft now at 1/2...I think...been a while since I checked.

I've been running mine that way for going on 6 months (I gotta find time to get the fronts in). They're 1 turn from full firm. No issues with S-03's in daily driving.

Be sure and get after market RSMs that allow shock adjustment/removal from UNDER the car (most do) so that ripping out the trunk lining is avoided.

I ordered the GC ones...that will work, right?

yep, GC RSM will allow shocks to be removed w/o tearing up the trunk lining.

Cool. You know, I've been able to access my RSM's pretty easily without tearing out much. It takes me 5 mins tops to get to them.

Dumb question...

How do the Konis compare to stock when on full soft? I have a convertible with limited chassis stiffness. I want the Konis for autox, but I don't want a bone-jarring (and frame twisting) ride all year 'round. When the Konis are set to soft, are they harder than the stock suspension?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Update:
I did the install today. It went really well. The Koni's were set to one turn from full soft. The GC RSM's were installed along with the Konis.

Surprisingly, the car drives really well. If feels no more tail happy than stock, and is much more comfortable. It also feels more solid at speed.

where were you able to buy only 2 rear konis? I'm in need of the same; already have the fronts.

Got mine at tirerack.com. Probably not the cheapest, but cheap enough and they got here fast.

I have a set of Dinan(Koni) rear shocks with about 1000 miles on them. If anyone is interested PM me.
