I'm a new E39 owner, and on my 2003 530iA I just can't seem to get the right-front turn signal bulb out. Google has told me to 1) turn it counterclockwise, 2) turn it clockwise, 3) squeeze and pull it straight out. None of these worked for me, although I was too nervous to use too much force & risk breaking the socket.

I've got the Xenon headlights if that makes a difference. Of course the bulb is in a position that's difficult to get any leverage with my long fingers. Inspection time is near and this small problem has me frustrated to no end! Help would be appreciated!!!

Jeez…. Feel lucky? Push in, twist left, pull the bulb holder out, if it breaks, it breaks. If you’re not feeling lucky, Lucky Bill, spray some silicone lube into the crease between the bulb holder, and the headlight housing, that might make you not need luck, to get lucky.

That one is a bit hard to access and get turned. It’s doable though. If you get totally frustrated, you can remove the four headlight mounting screws and carefully slide the headlight out enough to get easy access. Just be careful of the lower headlight trim piece where it tucks under the fender below the turn signal. You just slide the assy a little toward the center of car and it just pulls out easy.

Well, I sprayed some contact cleaner on it, MAF cleaner actually, great for unsticking things without leaving any residue.
I pushed in with my hand while twisting LEFT with an adjustable wrench - trust the twist left - SUCCESS! Bulb and socket popped right out.

Thank you @BimmrMeUpSnotty and @philly98640!

Try to avoid removing the wiring connector as the tabs which hold it onto the bulb holder are brittle and may(likely) break.

Ahh cool, you’re welcome. Funny story, that same bulb on my silver wagon went out the other day, I couldn’t remember if it twist to the right…. Nah, just kidding.

I feel your pain, brother! I am constantly nervous when it comes to unplugging or twisting, or otherwise manhandling these verschluggener plastic bits that, after 20 years, are as brittle as last year's leaves.

That’s what spares are for! It breaks, replace it.
