I'm excited to give back to the forum a little bit! Here is my first written guide covering how to do a fluid and filter change on the 5hp24 transmission. This guide was assembled only using official resources (Like ZF, and BMW TIS).

I hope that you find it valuable.

Excellent guide, well done! An alternative to using INPA for temperature readings is an instant read thermometer, especially if INPA readings are inaccurate and need "calibrating" as you described. I have also heard "baby bottle temperature" mentioned in the past.

Thanks! Yeah, at the end of the day, I don't like how INPA reads temperatures wrong. I wonder if there is a way we can modify the program to bring it back to normal levels. I checked a few of the instant read thermometers and saw one or two that may work - That you may be able to angle into the fill hole enough to reach the fluid. Just taking a guess, but is baby bottle temperature going off the heat of the pan, and you're aiming for a warm feel?

A few comments :

-- For transmission oil change, the ZF and TIS manuals specify a temperature between 30 and 50 degrees Celcius. So the INPA temp reading is fine even if it is off by 20 degrees Celcius...which it is not.

-- Your guide uses the INPA from Bimmergeeks. That version is an old one, and may be bugged. And why do they need Teamviewer ? Are they trying to remotely access, pry and hack the user who downloads it and uses it ?

Replace it with "Mike's Easy BMW Tools" from the link in the first post of: https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/mikes-easy-bmw-tools-package.879366/ . No Teamviewer there. And turn off internet and anti-virus when you use it, to be completely safe and shielded from prying bimmer-geeks..!!

-- The guide you wrote is all about INPA temperature readings and calibration. So you may want to change the title.

- ZF specifies capping off fill plug at 40C. They did say +- 10C but I just decided to cap it off at 40C. From 30C to 50C, the oil level rises considerably. For the A4S 310R / 270R transmission, it rises a full 7mm. There is no accurate measurement in that. I would imagine the oil level rises somewhat in the same way with the 5HP24. All about how you look at their instructions. Me personally, I like calculated approaches, so an exact 40C suited me well. It's also in the middle of the 30 - 50 range, so I feel like no matter what, no issues would come from capping the oil off at 40C.
- I use Teamviewer to watch my laptop screen, which is in my car, from my cellphone while I am under the car filling the transmission with oil. This lets me monitor temperature without moving my laptop (or risking it getting dirty with oil)
- It's a long guide, so I don't blame you if you didn't read the entire thing. The full procedure for the oil and filter change is in this guide, too. Take a look further down

Tell me about what makes you feel bimmergeek's version may be bugged, and what would be the impact of it being bugged? I have Mike's on another laptop but I don't like how it's in fahrenheit. The one click install is fancy though!

The old school way was to use a tire temp thermometer to measure it.

I don't have an auto trans but thanks for your work on this. Looks like you spent a good amount of time on it. I'm sure it will help some guys on the board here and that it what this community is about. I'm sure some comments will come in, and that is part of the process on these.

Cool to know!

Thanks! Yessir. First they scrutinize you then they expect a certain level of work from you once you're consistent, lol

Yup, that’s the way it works.
Just today I got a PM from a guy in Chicago that wanted to know if he could ship his 540 to me to do the guides and time it.

Haha, nice. Knowing is half the battle, because then when it happens it's just a "aha so you'll be one of those people, got it got it. Anyways..." and it's infinitely amount of times less impactful.
