Looking to upgrade my wife's "fun car" which is currently an 07 328i convertible. It's been a great car. Fun to drive and no repairs needed outside of a throttle body repair one time. Looking to upgrade to a 2017-2020 4 series convertible. Is there any reliability or ownership costs differences between the 430 4 cylinder and 440 6 cylinder? Is the x drive option worth chasing or not noticeable in this model? I have the x drive in my X5's which is a nice peace of mind in bad weather but the convertible is a garage queen unless its sunny and warm. Is there any real difference between the 2016 - 2020 model years?

The old school guy in me says go with the 440 if I can find the right car, color, and price but the 430 seems easier to find. I have owned a couple of X5 and an M3 that was my sons car for awhile so I am not new to BMW ownership.

Thanks in advance for any advice and help.

The 430i has the B48 turbo 4cyl engine which is quite reliable, especially when compared to the outgoing N20/26 in the 428i. It will be a decent bottom of the line engine, that has some pep. If you don't need the power, it will be fine. It's pretty efficient too.

The 440i has the B58 turbo 6 cylinder which is a very strong and reliable engine. If you need power, obviously get that.

I wouldn't get xdrive unless you need it.

There is no real difference between the years besides differences in the tech equipment, such as LED vs. HID vs. halogen headlights, navigation types, etc.

I love my 2019 430i and my friend has a 2020 440i and both are identical except for acceleration (which both are fast) and gas mileage (which my 430i gets about 29 mpg!)

Thanks for the replies so far. Glad to hear both engines seem equal in reliability. The mileage of the 430 would be nice. Especially with it needed premium. I expect we would be happy with acceleration of either one as both should be faster than the current standard non turbo 6 in our 328. Probably would be nice to get LED lights if possible. Definitely looking for back-up camera and few other tech upgrades.
