So it looks like I will be pickup up a 1998 E36 M3 sedan this weekend! I haul 2 kids to daycare in the morning so I was hoping y’all had a few pictures of what rear facing car seats look like in the back of these sedans.

I did this with two kids in the back seat of my Coupe. My seats were NLA Fisher Price tubular frame seats and provided the necessary access to strap them in. That was 22 years ago. Sorry no photos….

It's tight. You need the smallest rear facing seat you can get pretty much. These are just test fits. We went with the nuna pipa caviar cause you can run it without the base, giving a few extra inches.
My wife is about 5'8 with long legs and she has enough room in the passenger seat.

Thanks for these pictures! Does the sedan have more room in the rear than the coup?

I think the space is the same, but the sedans have different front seats, and you also have the advantage of rear doors to access the back seat, which make installation of kid seats much easier.
Back in the day (1996-1998) I was able to put two kid car seats in the back seat of my E30 sedan, and when I got my ‘95 M3 Coupe, was able to still use those car seats in the rear of the M3.
But like anything else, maybe more modern-day car seats are larger. Plus, my ‘95 pre-dates the seat anchors which are now standard in all cars.
Plus…in 1995, when the M3 was originally purchased, the USA still had the 55 mph maximum national speed limit, so the speedometer tick for ‘55’ is colored red.
Ah, those were the days…

I think they will fit but be tight. Thankfully my wife and I are both 5’4’’. That’s about the only good thing about being short haha.

Putting your kids in a car with 1990s safety equipment is lol

the day my boys were born, I immediately bought a DD to fit car seats. the thought of car seats indenting my leather and my kids trashing the interior with snacks is blasphemy.
However, I also can't wait until they are old enough where they can sit in the back seat and listen to instructions as they are yearning to experience a ride in my car.

Yeah, I mean, all of us died as kids in cars in the 90s.
We have a wagon for kid duty, but having a family, one might feel like spending some of their hobbies with said family.

This. I’ve been dying to take my son for a ride in my car. As I mentioned before I’m just going to go front facing with the car seat. I consider the car safe.

I flipped all my kids front facing as soon as they showed any interest in seeing what's going on. And +1 on skipping the base for the rear facing seats. I know that's the same as putting antifreeze in their bottles, but somehow not a single one died - not even once!
I also felt the same way as this guy without seeing any stats, but was glad my approach was validated after I did it. I ditched the car seats and went to boosters as soon as my kids were dexterous enough to do their own seat belts.

That's not my point. When all the cars on the road had the same safety equipment it made sense. Now we're talking about larger, heavier cars with newer safety equipment that includes updated standards and advancements in technology.
I'm not the fun police, I'm just sharing my opinion on the matter.

You can compensate for all that by not browsing instagram on your phone while driving

I can now confirm you can fit 2 rear facing car seats on the back! But if you’re over 5’6” it might be an issue. When we purchased these car seats we weren’t thinking about buying the smallest ones so if you look for those they might fit even better.

I wish there was a way to get other drivers out there to not do this.

You just have to drive like you're riding a motorcycle - head on a swivel, cover the brakes, show down, and get over when your spidey sense starts tingling.
I was on a divided highway this morning, and the driver in front of me was setting off warning bells. I tapped the brakes a few times to signal to drivers behind me that I was going to slow down, and when he got in the left turn lane and then drove straight through into the dirt, and then merged back into traffic, I was prepared to avoid him - and had also done my part in keeping the people behind me from rear-ending me.
