I had intermittent stalling issues while driving that I tried to fix by installing a new VDO fuel pump. The drive after that the car stalled on me 4 times while driving, once while going 65. Research on the forums pointed to the crank position sensor so I replaced that with a non OEM one from RockAuto. The following drive the car felt better than before especially when clutching in where it would sometimes stall. The next day the car did not start, only cranking.

Spraying starter fluid gets the engine to run briefly and the engine turns over briefly off the priming of the fuel pump sometimes. I changed the crank sensor back to the original one with 172k on it and still no start.

When I spray starter fluid my rpm gauge works. Could I still need to replace the crank position sensor with an OEM one?

Appreciate any help pointing me in the right direction.

apparently cam and crank sensors operate together so it's probably worth replacing together. my experience trying to diagnose these obd 1 cars is that it's much easier to replace parts ... OE non-bmw versions are not too expensive. and if it hasn't failed yet, it still might in the future. and either way you get to check things off the list if there are future problems.

after chasing a 1222 code (stalling on idle) for a while i just replaced everything and it works like a dream. i know this is not the exact answer you are looking for but FWIW! good luck. hank

here is an account of my journey:

If you have a round connector under the hood you can probably scan for problems with BMW specific software. Go to the Z3 diagnostics forum and dl INPA. You will need an inpa cable from eBay or Amazon, get one that comes with the round cable adapter. This will work with a windows 10 laptop.
