View Full Version : GETTING ABS, DSC Traction Control Warning Lights after replacing valve cover gaskets

I have a 2010 335i convertible with 80K+ miles on it. It was leaking oil, so I did the laborious job of replacing the valve cover gaskets. Put it all back to together and the oil leak has been fixed. I drove it 2 or 3 times with no problems. Then a week later on the next drive, I get a bunch of warning lights about the DSC, Traction Control, ABS all malfunctioning and to drive moderately.

I am wondering if this is just a coincidence and something(s) failed at a random time... OR did I forget to connect some wiring or something loose from when I did the valve cover gasket job? OR... perhaps something failed after having no battery attached for a week, or possibly something needs to be reset?

Hoping someone has some insight as to what might be happening here?

I don't have a scanner but I did the dash code check and they are...

CC-ID 24
CC-ID 167
CC-ID 41
CC-ID 149
CC-ID 354
CC-ID 236

Prior to this the only warning light I had was an occasional tire pressure monitor failure after driving about 15 minutes or so.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My guess is that you pinched a wire, or maybe pulled one loose from it's connector. One thing to check is low brake fluid.

DSC and Traction Control are nothing more than the opposite use of the brakes compared to ABS. If you mash the brake pedal and start to skid, the ABS releases brake pressure from the affected wheels to keep them from locking up. ABS looks for wheel lock compared to wheel motion at the other corners of the car. Traction Control looks for rear wheel spin compared to front wheels, so wheel speed sensors are a common thread.

When you mash the gas and tires break free from the ground, the brake system will step in to slow a slipping tire -- the reverse operation of ABS. Traction Control will also reduce throttle so that the tires slow down.

My point is, you can have one problem that is affecting the brake system in two different ways. There's no reason you cannot drive the car, you just need to be mindful that the car might not be reliable in the area of skidding or wheel spin. The car will go and it will stop, depending upon the pedal you are pushing, just stay away from full throttle from a standing stop, or full braking when driving. If you drive as if you had a fish bowl on the front seat and your goal is to not slosh any water out, and you will be fine.

Thank you. Will double check all wiring in engine bay.
