I picked up a ZF 5 speed for my currently automatic M3 for a future manual swap. I got all the parts for the shifter assembly, and when i mocked them up I have all gears but 5th. I had a 1997 328is with the same transmission and do not recall the detent being so difficult to get past and put into fifth gear. The person I bought the transmission off of said that he replaced the detent, but I am unsure if that is after he pulled the transmission out or not.

I have tried just about everything and it just seems that the shifter shaft where the linkage hooks up on the transmission will not rotate clockwise to engage 5th gear. I am assuming that possibly the detent was installed incorrectly but any guidance is appreciated.

Having made the mistake once before, if the detent is accidentally rotated during install, the ramp won't be able to allow the pin to compress. I'm not saying this is your problem, but it's one possibility.

I fixed it by having to remove the detent and rotate it 180*.
