My understanding is that they won't work with BMW electronics because the ohms range used by Japanese cars is different from European cars. The company I work for sells Apexi and I asked them when they came by for some product training.

They work just fine on BMW. I've had one on my car for almost a year. Get a wiring diagram for your application and solder in the corresponding wires. When my car was N/A I used it to get 13whp. Not to shabby in my book.

you guys think their vtec controller could be hacked to activate the vanos?

I guess anything is possible. I can't dispute the other guy that says he runs one on his car. I went and pulled one (S-AFCII) from the shelf to look at the installation instructions. No European cars are listed. It does have a generic instruction of matching colored wires from the unit to your ECU. I just remember the APEXi guy saying that Euro cars ECU's operate in a different ohm range than their unit is calibrated for. Try their website www.apexi.com and see if you get a more clear answer.

S50/52 Vanos is an on/off proposition, other than moving the actuation point
up or down in the rpms, not much to "tune". I've experimented with the Vanos
on a dyno via the TEC3, nothing to get too excited about with the Vanos tuning.

How 'twitchy' is it with the Tec3? I was told the resolution on the VANOS wasn't that great in the Tec3 and it doesn't handle transitions as well. Maybe you can shed some light on this since you have experience?
Thanks,
Boris

Is there any chance you can fill us in on which pinouts you tapped into on your 1997 M3? :)

It does work, I used one for about a year, you have to play with the mass air settings though because they don't have a preset for a bmw.

On turbo applications under 9psi is it neccessary to have a base turbo chip, or will the Apexi be sufficent?
I read a post of yours in a past thread that said you used this in conjunction with an AA stage 2 chip. For the guys not boosting as heavily as you, will the engine retard timing according to the richening of the mixture with only the Apexi?
Or is the base chip with the Apexi the way to go?

I'd like to bump this thread up as Apexi has released their new Super AFC NEO which I've been looking into for my boosted 325.. I currently have my whole car done except for injectors and tuning so my car absolutely runs like crap at 6psi. I've been hearing that the new AFC NEO has a pro 16point setting to control the fuel delivery. It would be interesting to find out whether or not this will be sufficient to allow an upgraded Air flow meter and bigger injectors as I am not interested in installing a standalone system.

I thought on boosted cars once you max out your hfm the AFc can't change anything.doesn't the dme run off maps when on boost?

I'm trying to figure these questions out. Apexi doesn't seem to target our cars so they really don't have a lot to say when you call and explain the problem. But that is not to say these piggyback systems won't work....

There is a version of the SAFC that is designed for european cars, it's gotta have presets for an e36..
If you guys go to the 3-series forum and search for 'DIY turbo' there is a guy there building a very low cost turbo kit that intends to tune with an SAFC. I forget his username but you might want to ask him about it. He looked like he was pretty close to getting the car running aside from exhaust and intercooler piping.

This thread is from 2004. Things have greatly improved since 2004 so there is no reason to be using a piggyback anymore.
