Hi all,

I have a 2000 540i msport and my drive shaft is on its way out. I have not had the opportunity to get it on the lift myself but a “mechanic” at tiresplus told that was one of the major things to keep my eye on. My question is, do all e39s use the same driveshaft? Do I need to find another 540 to pull from in the worst case scenario or can it be from any of them (525,528,530,540,m5)

Tiresplus and mechanic are probably a contradiction in terms.
There are several variants of the e39 driveshaft dependent on engine and transmission combination.
Typical failures are inexpensive, replaceable components, the center bearing/support or the "Giubo" flexible coupling.
Any symptoms?

@DrainerXD, what symptoms do you have? A lot of symptoms attributable to driveshaft can actually be connected to other things.

Taking a e39 driveshaft out gets complex.

You need skills, tools, time. / a lift and power tools are good....

540i only - I6 / M5 will not fit. / I don’t think manual and automatic V8 are the same. You need to go to realoem.com

1) take exhaust out.
2) the Guibo ( front ) and the cv joint ( rear ) are on tight.

What are your symptoms - vibration, thumping? Etc....

ps - do you know how your motor and trans mounts are?
