in the process of dealing with a few things on my 08 335i i was draining the oil last night and when i removed the oil filter cap oil came from the housing,it didn't seem to be under pressure but it sure seems odd that oil would spill from the housing.Enought to have to rush and get a towel around the base, sure seems odd, the pan was already drained. Is this normal?

When you drain the oil remove the oil cap on the engine Then what a bit and then unscrew the oil filter cap, use a new o ring on the cap

How do you reset the Oil Change Interval Counter? Do I need to learn how to get into the Secret Menu?

thanks for the reply to you both but im trying to figure out if the cap should force oil out of the cap when you unscrew it the oil, almost like its under pressure.

With the oil cap on the engine there is vacuum created when the engine drain plug is removed oil comes out when you remove the oil cap vacuum is released then when you loosen the oil filter cap a bit and wait it will drain down, remember no vacuum. Google resetting the service system

There is a check valve that holds oil in the filter so that on the next Engine Start, the oil flow is immediate, as opposed to the delay it takes for oil pressure to build again. If you wanted, you could tap the START Button so that the oil in the filter gets pushed out enough so that it didn't come out when the cap is opened. OR, you could keep a rag handy so that when you open the cap you could wipe up the mess. I do the latter.
