Have sourced a 1983 m10 engine from a 320i to go in my 1967 1600. Plan to keep original 4 speed gearbox . Am wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to which clutch to use. Expect to replace disc, cover, pilot and throwout bearing. Will likely replace master and slave cylinders as well. Suggestions?

Bill, I’m not sure, but you may run into problems.

Your ‘67 4-speed trans is likely a 232 model with the Porsche synchros, and it might even be mechanical clutch? I know of folks who’ve swapped in the 2l motor into their early 1600s but they also swapped in an upgraded trans (the later Borg-synchroed 242 4-speed or the 245 5-speed OD boxes).

I know a bit about 02 trannys - auto, late 4-speed, 5-speed CR or the e21 5-speed OD (swapped into mine) - but I know little about the early units and their variations and unique features..

I suggest you research more about your particular 4-speed trans model (take pics of tranny casing, input/output shafts, clutch arrangement, and the flywheel size on the M10 you’re looking to run), and then post your Q on the BMW 2002 FAQ discussion forum, where folks who know the early models particular specs and compatibility with later engines can chime in. (THE Best resource for 02s).

Here’s a link to the forum on FAQ to post your Q:

Good luck!

Wonder if it would be a good idea to switch to a 320i gearbox. Any issues with that?

You’d want the Getrag 245/5 out of an 80-83 320i. It’s the 5-speed OD one I mentioned.

Good 5-speed conversion article:
