Hey folks

I bought a 320d with the N4720DA engine as spares / repairs. It was running rough, but ran. I got it recovered home and it drove itself onto the van. Get home. Doesn’t start. Just clicks. Been sat on the drive for a month as I’ve had no time to look at it.

Anyway, stripped the rocker cover off and it looks like the timing chain failed. The chain guide nearer the top has snapped in two and there are broken rockers under the camshafts. At this point there is no other visible damage.

Unless it failed while it wasn’t running, the only other way it failed was the first time I tried to switch it on when it came off the truck. I’m unsure the reason of the rough running beforehand, chain slipped or stretched perhaps that eventually lead to failure.

Anyway, my question is does anyone have any idea how bad the damage is likely to be? Might I get away with just valve damage?
