I purchased a used 2007 328i with 177K miles on it. As soon as I got it I took it in for an oil change and new tires. The odometer was reading 177K. I picked up the vehicle later on that morning. The next morning I noticed the odometer was reading 94K on it. Being new to the BMW world I took a stab at scrolling through the menu and looked up youtube videos and I CANNOT figure out what is going on. Anyone else have this happen? Any advice is appreciated.

Is it possible you inadvertently switched it from kilometers to miles? Is there a red dot showing on the instrument cluster?

I tried that but even doing the math km converts to 286km. The reading over the odometer reads in mls. I'm stumped...

But, is there a red dot in the instrument cluster? That’s called the tamper dot and it shows up when the mileage in cluster doesn’t match the mileage recorded in the lighting control module (LKM), and perhaps the key fob.

I just noticed the red dot between the actual mileage and the trip odometer!! Now I have a lead to follow. I just saw a youtube video on this but the one I saw only said that when this occurs the mileage jumps up not down. I went from 177k to 94K... Any advice?
Thanks

There was a guy that had this happen when his cluster took a shit and it went to like 400k lol. You can probably go on inpa and see what module it is that has the absurdly low mileage compared to everything else. I was under the impression that the car always took the highest stored mileage lol. Take it back to where you got it worked on

So, I disconnected my battery to replace my alternator and when I plugged it back in it reverted back to the original 177k miles it initially read.
Who knows....
