I want to replace the cam gears on my 2009 328i n52. Is it necessary to lock the flywheel with the pin, or can i rotate the crank to TDC and place the cam jig on and remove the cam gear bolts and then loosen the tensioner to remove the cam gears and reverse order with new parts?

@zeus800 did you ever find the answer for this? I need to do mine this week and not sure if I need to remove the intake manifold to access the flywheel hole.

Also, I want to confirm if once at TDC and cams locked if I remove tensioner to get cam gears replaced.

It's not necessary to lock the flywheel, but you'll be taking a huge risk not locking the flywheel. Locking the flywheel ensures TDC, along with the camshaft locking tool. You can remove the alternator, airbox and intake boot for easier access to the pin hole. I believe you can access from underneath. There's a video on YouTube with a guy installing the pin from underneath. Another indication of TDC is when the QR codes on the camshafts are facing straight up. Good luck and keep us updated.
