I ordered a performance intake manifold to my E39 540i 1996-model. And planned on also buying this "bolt-onkit" from VF engineering.

I just wonder what parts would need strenghten up before doing too much to the Whp. :) Ive been thinking Schmiedmann tuning&parts shop nearby for those things. How is the automatic clutch on the early models of the 540i? Do i need a "stage2" clutch and hardened axle etc

Any recommendations highly appreciated to a person who never driven a supercharged car before or doing anything with those. Pretty discret kit also. :embarrasm:rolleyes

Since you have the 6 speed, I don''t think you need any strengthening, but may need other tuning to maximize flow.... i.e. exhaust, headers, chip tuning.

I considered this about 15 yrs ago when someone was selling a used VF for about $2,000 but I have a 5 speed an worried about breaking the transmission with the added HP so passed on that project.

Jim Lev a Moderator here has a NOS setup with 90HP shots. He'll probably chime in.

Another way back to AKtuning then as soon as i have this all set. Ive also read that the pre -98 model of 540i can take about 410-420 HP before the block cracks. But for sure i dont know since clearly the 96 model was never bought into the states. So not much people to ask about the car if not translating german forums (which ive not even tried doing).

The car itself is in good shape in the engine and as soon as i bought it all oils were changed, bushings and new wheels, racing breakpads. So ive already spent too much on this car according to some people. But its my money my makings i just need tips on my way. :-)

A bolt on kit is only half the story, you defo need headers, top end work, clutch and chassis strengthening. Then a proper map on a rolling road

If your getting things from things from Schmiedmann you might as well get the headers too. They are M5 headers, you'll need to have some custom welding done to get them to connect to your exhaust.
My NOS is a 2 stage 180HP kit, it was 100HP, but it just wasn't enough.

Yup, I've got meth too. The progressive controller controls both the juice and meth.

Block cracks? Where did you hear that? Philly has a 98 with a VF pushing more HP than me. No problems with our blocks or drivetrain, both of us have an LSD.
