That's one of many ground blocks in the car. Looks like this with plastic cover removed.

I’ve owned about 10 BMWs, I’ve not seen this setup before. Wow.

Those are all over the car. There are several under the hood on each fender, under front carpet and in the c pillars.

THANK YOU!! It's been driving me crazy trying (unsuccessfully) to identify it through keyword searches specific to the taillight!
So, it's just a common ground for various electrical connections? Any idea which ones? Or why it's in such an odd place?

THANK YOU, MAYORCHUCK! I searched the newtis site a bit but really had no idea what I was even looking for. Your input is much appreciated!

One more question about the (facelift) taillight assembly...maybe this constitutes a new thread? Unsure so I'll ask here first.
I realize that the absence of rear fog lights is typical in US models, but what about the taillight itself? Mine has a cover that looks like it can just be snapped off (red arrow), rather than a socket and bulb, at light #4 (highlighted in diagram). Seems no light has ever been installed there...like it's an optional taillight since light #3 is dual filament/purpose (fog and tail)? What benefit, if any, is there to adding a light here?
TIA!

I bought the bulb holder from BMW and installed bulbs in the empty slots. Then I connected them to the brake light so the brake lights are much stronger.

Search e38 quad brake light mod. very cool and worth doing. I have done it on all my e38s.

Search e38 quad brake light mod. very cool and worth doing. I have done it on all my e38s.Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that quad brake lights were achieved by utilizing the two empty spaces at the very bottom of the assembly (green arrows) - below the tail and brake lights (#4 and #5, respectively) ... for a total of 8 sockets and bulbs on each side, rather than 6 as shown in the newtis diagram (and labeled here in red)?
I'm curious about the missing socket in space #4 (yellow arrow) - identified as "tail light" ... unless Im way off and #4 is, in fact, the rear fog light that USA models lack?? And the space used in quad brakes?

Be sure to read the comments.I actually just re-read that thread last night, minus the linked tutorial, and still missed that quad brakes = 6th bulb/socket. Thanks for directing me back for closer inspection [emoji4]
So what, then, are the two openings at the bottom for (green arrows in my earlier post)?

Search e38 quad brake light mod. very cool and worth doing. I have done it on all my e38s.Seems easy enough, especially if going the jumper wire method ... not on my list of priorities but maybe one day!

Did mine a couple of months ago with the jumper method, easy mod, about an hour, does look much brighter... mine was a pre-facelift..

The area that the green arrows are pointing to in your pic are NOT associated with either of the rear tail lights. You can see the brass threaded bolts that secure the rear tail lights to the car (in both my pic and yours) and take note that the "holes" your green arrows point to are in the body of the car...and not in the rear tail light. If you were to drill those areas...you'd have two holes in the rear end of your car that would be below the rear tail lights. See last pic of the e38 rear tail light/bumper area and the two red Xs below.
{note location of the 4 brass threaded bolts that reveal exactly were the rear tail lights fit up against the rear of the car}

it is common grounding point. Clean it and put it back.
