Gentlemen, I am new to this forum since I am considering to get me another Bimmer and know well the forums participants are very knowledgeable individuals. I had in the past a 735i 1990 standard transmission, which drove it for 10 years after 250K miles, never had a problem..! Perhaps because was a manual transmission..! Now I am looking into a more powerful car that I can afford, and have my eyes on a 2008 550i. The problem is that the car seems to have an electronic transmission problem. The seller says that the ECU is not communicating with the tranny. We all know that the Mechatronics is the brain for all that and replacement cost high $$$. Now I am thinking that if the price is right, I could replace the whole tranny for a good used unit. But I got few questions that you guys may be familiar with:
Are all the 4.4 V-8's using the same transmission?
If not what would be the right fit?
Does the ECU needs to be re-programmed once the donor is in place?
Any other causes for these tranny issues?

I really appreciate sharing your wisdom on this matter..!

Could be as simple as a leaking mechatronics sleeve. Or it could have been flooded. Does the seller have a good history on it? Who diagnosed the issue you describe?

RealOEM says the transmission was common to E60, E61, E63 and E64.

I don't think any price would be right for the car with a trans issue unless you knew exactly what is wrong with it, personally I would walk away the cars aren't worth much anyway

True more when you're buying one than when you're maintaining the one you already own. (The devil you know...)
