I have been experiencing an intermittent issue when I idle lately. Typically the 328i hovers in the 600-700 rpm range but occasionally it will drop to 400-500 and it is fairly violent shake to the car when this happens. Is this a misfire in the cylinder?

In the past I had an issue where I had to give the car some gas pulling out in traffic (ATL always traffic) and when I came to the next light there was heavy vibration/sputtering. I pulled over turned the car off and back on and it ran fine. This has happened 2-3 times in the past 6 months so I am hesitant to run it above 4k rpm now. I don't know if these two issues are related. Any advice?

Any check engine lights or stored codes?

Check engine light came on during the event with sputtering but it went away as soon as I shut the car off and has not come on until it happened a few months later. I don't have a scanner for codes. Is there one that is recommended?

ISTA is BMW dealer level software. I've heard good things about an app called "Carly" but I have no experience with it. A good BMW capable scanner is absolutely vital if you plan on doing your own repairs.

I have Carly and love it, it isnt cheap at first but once set up and going you can scan and code the basics. I hate to say it but Auto Parts stores can scan, they arent indepth but can usually get you a code. WHen I had a misfire I went to autozone and it showed a misfire code on there cde reader.
