Hi Gentlemen and Ladies,
I just picked up a 550i , which is a step up from the commuter 325i I use as a daily driver. Its in fair shape body wise, but I need to replace the front bumper cover, and replace the 20" wheels the previous owner had on it (the tires are showing rub wear on the outter edge from fender contact).

Replaced the battery as a charge wouldn't hold and I couldnt even get the solonoid to kick on a jump. Now, the solonoid kicks, but I get no crank.

Wondering how often the starters are the actual culprit and not something else... I've been researching and seen a note about an IVM. But thats not something I am familiar with. Multimeter, test light, and specifications aren't out of reason for me. Just looking for some direction possibly before I hoist the engine and disconnect an exhaust manifold to replace a starter, not to mention the waste of cash it would be otherwise.

Sorry if it sounds like a silly question, but I grew up with classic muscle cars, and 4 cyl crap commuters. Rebuilding carbs, alternators, and starters. I got my first BMW about 3 years ago now, and on that 325, I've yet to find things I cant fix. Cyl head up anyhow. Rebuilt the VANOS, replaced the plugs, coolant resovior, fuel filter/regulator, and went through all the vaccum lines and replaced as needed. Cars I know, would tell me to replace the starter. I am sure with proper specs, I could rebuild it (machine shop for block and valve guides of course), pending they arent throw away parts.

Just feeling a little daunted by the amount of electronics in this 550i and not looking to throw money away replacing parts that aren't in need of replacement.

I just saw a writeup on the IVM but I cannot remember which forum. It is located by the DME under the cover by the windscreen and apparantly can get water damage from leaves and debris collecting in the area. If a search is not fruitful here try 5series.net

The IVM isn't related to the starter.

If you have a new battery, and it clicks but won't start, it could be the starter, or something with the wiring. If the positive cable has excessive resistance or is broken somewhere, it won't get enough current to the starter. Same goes for the ground cable from the engine to the body. I've seen them rust through.
