View Full Version : Broken fan

Just curious, has anyone ever had the issue I’m about to describe: I recharged my A/C, then turned it on. I was getting a ton of noise but attributed it to my lightweight flywheel, because every time I pushed in the clutch it got quiet. Then I went on a short drive, A/C still blowing nice an cool. Feeling satisfied I went home. Soon as I parked I see smoke coming from under the hood. Coolant was everywhere. Turns out 3 of the blades on my fan caught on the shroud and snapped off. Lucky for me one of them punched a hole in my radiator. I removed everything an saw on the shroud an indent of where the A/C compressor was rubbing. So I think what happened is, once the A/C was on it rattled the shroud so much it bent it over enough, to interfere with the fan, causing the blades to catch and snap. Resulting in a nice new hole in my radiator. Anyone have any similar experiences, or some shitty similar ones. I just got my car going after 2 years of it sitting. Then boom, down again till the parts show up. Fuck me lol.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190820/d38a65ab7cce1b1078fd6d0d6feddff7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190820/d70f3ecb8eefab076ebbd883c6d0b956.jpg

I think you have something else going on, BMW would certainly not design components to sit THAT close: make sure you radiator and shroud are seated and secured correctly. I'd be looking at engine mounts if the first 2 items check out.

Exploding fan is common. There could be several things associated but many times its old engine mounts.

Fan hit the radiator when the water pump bearing failed. Fan parts everywhere and put a nice dent in the radiator. Replaced everything then the pump leaked 2 years later. Radiator cracked in another 2.

gc325is that’s rough dude. I’d be a tad annoyed lol. An for you other guys, it’s not motor mounts. I appreciate the advice tho, don’t get me wrong. [emoji869][emoji41][emoji869] Those are brand new as of July. It was however because, the bottom tab on the shroud wasn’t tuck into the slot on the radiator. So when the A/C was going it was falling forward into it. Which in turn tweaked the shroud into the fan blades. It fucked my water pump too. All pretty easy fixes but man did it suck after only having my car back for a few days. Live an you learn. Can’t grow without a few kicks to the sack, or so I’m told[emoji869][emoji48][emoji869] wrench on bros!!!!!

change your motor and trans mounts. That's the biggest reason for failed fan.

Get an electric fan. Never have this problem again, have different problems instead!
