A $40 PayPal reward awaits anyone who can successfully identify the pins needed between eject box 84-21-2-222-122 (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/eject-box/84212222122/) and a 2001 740i (7/01 build). Here are the eject box pins:

1....purple
2....brown
5....red
13...green
14...white
16...yellow

I'll even give you a head start:

I suspect pin 2 is ground and pin 5 is power. Using a DVM, I have confirmed this corresponds respectively to pin 17 and pin 8 on the car's eject box plug. I further suspect a missing "cradle-on" or bus signal is preventing eject box power-up.

Full disclosure: My car came with a factory phone (since removed) and SES module (removed due to failure and now jumpered out). It currently has a Bluetooth TCU installed which, without an SES, requires pins 11 and 14 be jumpered in the eject box plug. Note my car has 16 wired pins in the 18-pin eject box plug.

Post your reponses in this thread. I will test them in order received. The first response that results in eject box power to my iPhone snap-in adapter...wins.

My guess is it's this one. The WDS has it marked -08/2002 but it should be -08/2001. I think it is simply a typo as that date would put it into the E65. It does show that as a Siemens and not a Motorola though. Here is the list to check for yourself.

Mayorchuck,

Thanks for playing. I've seen this chart. It's not applicable to my car. It's not even close (ex: my power is pin 8, my ground pin 17).

Green = Pairing (not needed or is does it need to be grounded just in case ?)
White = Cradle on
Brown = Ground
Red = Power

The rest.....
Don't care about the money I just want to help.

Try grounding the white wire!

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!

Grounding eject box green pin 13 did it!....almost.

Although grounding white pin 14 didn't work, it was still removed when I grounded 13. That combination worked. If pin 14 is re-connected, it fails. Pin 14 must remain open while pin 13 is grounded.

This is a fortuitous outcome since pin 14 (on the car) must be jumpered into pin 11 (on the car) when using a TCU in many cases. This leaves the eject box completely independent of installed electronics. Therefore a TCU or ULF is optional. The schematic is thus:

1...Purple (pairing)...unused (no conflict*)
2...Brown (ground)...car pin 17
5...Red (power)...car pin 8
13...Green (cradle on)...ground (conflict*)
14...White (phone on?)...open (conflict*)
16...Yellow (?)...unused (no conflict*)

*Conflict: incompatible with corresponding pin wire on car connector

I have contradictory information for pin 14 (on the car). The Bentley manual shows it routed to TCU pin 21/33 unlabeled, while a TIS diagram shows TCU pin 21/33 is "phone on" routed to SES only. Either way, it's not needed.

I suspect pin 16 is a bus connection used in newer cars, since this eject box can be mated with Media and Connect snap-ins, which interface with the car's onboard multimedia systems (not present on E38).

Alright Brian1960: send me a PM and I'll send you $40.

Hi Frankie,

Regarding the great writeup on your website, I have a question that you may have already puzzled through.....

For the eject box, you list part# 84-21-2-222-122
When I check on esctuning, there are two separate items that list that part#
One is called an "Eject box", for $91.66. But the brief description says its for iPhone 4/4s
The other item they have assigned that part# is called an "Eject-Box Frame", for $107.50

Do you happen to know which one is correct for the E38? does it require both? The 2nd item has no picture.
I know your writeup says the item has been discontinued by BMW. I'm hoping the IPhone 4 description on ECS is just outdated

On the ECS website, the eject box 84-21-2-222-122 (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/eject-box/84212222122/) listed for $91.66 is the correct part. The other item (listed for $107.50) is for MINI but is probably identical. And yes, the product description ("Snap-in point for IPhone 4/4s") is way out-of-date.

Looks like antenna adapter 84-32-0-027-140 (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/cable-connector/84320027140/) is no longer available unfortunately, so you'll have to employ my alternate method for antenna hook-up: swap in a FAKRA connector.

Wiring adapter 84-10-9-205-271 (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/wireless-device-snap-in-adapter-cable-priced-each/84109205271/) is still available. Good.

If you have additional questions not addressed in my DIY, post here or send a PM.

Well, it took a month, but ECS finally notified that this item is not available anymore, and cancelled my order.
If anybody has an eject box that they're no longer using, contact me and I'll be interested in purchasing.

Sorry to hear that.

Try searching the web using keywords "BMW 84-21-2-222-122" for other possible sources. Also check Amazon and eBay.

I'll update my DIY.

Believe I may have a spare eject box. Will have a look in the parts boxes in the next few days and let you know.

That would be awesome if you do have a spare.
I've been googling and searching, but no hits. Some suppliers still list the part#, but they all have a note that says "no longer available".
So glad this forum exists!
