You need software to turn it off but you need to find what caused it to come on. One common issue is the passenger seat occupancy sensor. I've also had a seat belt tension sensor cause the light to come on. There are a number of things it could be. You will want to get a proper diagnosis to see what's going on.

Thanks for all the replies. Does the e38 have seat belt tensioners?

Agree with Mayorchuck, but even with a diagnostic tool there can still be some confusion. Here's my situation... My airbag light comes on frequently. I have a Foxwell NT520 scanner and for my car it reports faults for:
11 - MRS Power Supply
12 - MRS Fault lamp (AWL)
1A - MRS seat occupancy sensor recognition
F0 - MRS internal control unit fault
The 1A code can probably be easily addressed by installing a new under-the-seat sensor. I think 12 was present because the instrument cluster light illuminated. Now, what to make of codes 11 and F0. Are those indicative of problem with the control unit itself, or perhaps are they secondary faults triggered in part by a failing seat occupancy sensor. So, there is some confusion... Where there is clarity, is in deciding which parts to throw at the problem first. A seat sensor (65-77-6-940-191) is very low cost ($80) compared to the control unit. A new control unit (65776900727) at my local dealer runs about $1,400. So, I plan on installing a new seat sensor first.

The car does have seat belt tensioners and there are some fine wires to this that can be seen between the seat and centre console. That connector is quite delicate. The warning lamp can be cancelled using INPA.
Have you done any work on the car? If the ignition is turned on with any airbag circuit component disconnected, this will generate the fault lamp illumination.

I think that I have a problem with my airbag ignition circuit # 4. Does anyone know what that is and where it is ? Thanks.

Thanks for all the input. I cleared my light with INPA. Ill see if it stays out or I need something.
