Hello, first time here but I frequent all the time.

I really need advice. Badly.

I had an engine light come on recently, limp mode on the freeway. I went right to have the code read, and the Service engine soon light went away as well as limp mode as soon as I restarted the car which is typical of VANOS errors.

When I started back up without lights or errors, I noticed a huge difference in the throttle. The power of the car had diminished significantly. Requiring me to rev higher to accelerate, etc.

The engine code at Advance Auto read '

Camshaft position sensor B Exhast overly retarded.

I assumed it was the sensor, but since I've ran into limp mode on the freeway before due to VANOS, I understood my engine may have been sludgey from sitting for year straight.

I changed the oil of course, after it sat, and since then again. All in under 1,000 miles.

I was going to change the sensor and clean the vanos but I took it to the "best" shop in Charlotte. I was worried my timing had been messed up, or something more serious, maybe stretching of timing chain or what not. They read the code with the advanced ODB and read the vanos solenoids were bad. I hesitantly agreed. Changed them and oil without doing anything but scanning.

So here I am with new VANOS Solenoids and the problem persists. The car has maybe half the horsepower. If I need to accelerate, Its like the turbos have to do it for me.

..

Other shop ran car with ODB attached, noticed drop in Fuel Pressure - Believes its fuel pump.

I am moving forward with HPFP replacement.

Anyone think this could be as simple as a battery/cam positioning sensor?

The car runs fine, in fact their techs cant really notice much of a difference. But the fuel pressure is missing.

I hope HPFP will solve this?

Also the "best" shop stated my water pump had thrown a code. But it has not come back.

The car sat for a year, then had body work done on it where the guy was constantly jumping it and moving it. Battery has been through hell, though it's hardly been used. It was replaced before sitting for a year.

Car has 96,XXX.

Any advice would be helpful

Alex

I thought bad HPFP would just leave you stranded... not diminish horsepower, or fuel pressure. Could it be anything else?
