View Full Version : Getting mix of hot and cold air out of system

What I am experiencing:
- Regardless of outside temperature or heating/cooling system settings, I only get full-hot air coming from either the defroster or floor/lower vents. Mid-level vents seem to do what I want them to wrt to temperature, to include blowing cold air during hot weather.
- When it is hot out and I use the iDrive control knob to adjust the vent settings so that the defroster and lower vents are closed (driver center air set to cold), the hot air that was coming out elsewhere is now mixed with the cool air coming out of the center two mid-level vents. In other words, I cannot eliminate some hot air always being mixed in with cold.
- When I select "Auto" in hot weather the defroster closes, but the lower vents are controlled to be partially open with hot air coming out of them.
- When it is cold out, and I do want some hot air, it gets too hot because I can't cause the defroster or lower vents to do anything other than full-hot. I can adjust fan speed, but think I should be able to mitigate the temperature a little bit.

What I have done:
- Had the AC checked and serviced by a BMW dealer. They said that the system was holding pressure and the compressor was working, but to replace the 3-way heater control valve, which was what I suspected.
- Replaced the 3-way heater control valve with a BMW OEM part from PelicanParts. No improvement/change in operation.
- Used my Foxwell 510 to clear all codes and errors. I'm not yet smart enough to use it for any sort of systematic diagnostic purpose.

I think it must be an issue with the flapper/dampener control system, but I don't have any idea of how to reset or replace/repair it. Love to get this communities input. Thank you!

Could be a door actuator problem
