Hey everyone,

After doing quite a bit of researching, I have found the 335d as being a good option for me for a new daily. I want something torquey, comfortable, handles decently, with good economy, and I think this would fit the bill. I considered other options like an e39 M5 but I want an automatic. Stoplights and stop signs are everywhere in the area I live in so I'm getting tired of dailying a manual. I currently own an e36 and e46 m3.

My question to those of you who own them or are more familiar with those engines and chassis, what are some things to look for? I've seen a few overviews of some of the common emissions equipment that usually needs to be replaced on them.

Also, what should I pay for a decently maintained one with 80 - 100k miles?

Thanks!

I believe its a great car, I recommend it to anyone looking to buy. I saw one recently for $9k, 110k miles. Great purchase in my mind around that ballpark. Some things I've experience and seem to be a major issue is dirty injectors. Shorly after I bought the car at 110k miles the car started to get rougher by the day. Ended up being two bad injectors that eventually threw codes for rough idle. It took me far longer than it should have to replace them, but two expensive injectors, some code readers, new tools, I finished it. The other thing is carbon buildup. Many tune theirs and remove or block the EGR cooler to stop the build up, or methanol with the bonus of cleaning. If the car you buy has bad build up, it will need a walnut blast. It doesnt look that daunting to do as a backyard mechanic. Mine wasnt so bad so I've put it off for now. The easiest way I can think to check would be to take the clip off the intake going to the throttle body. Peak a cell phone camera in there and see how dirty the throttle body is. I was intimidated by the intake manifold removal at first, but after you've done it once, its so easy to rip it off dozens of times.
I also had a glow plug module die, nothing major, $110 and intake manifold removal for easier access. My SCR (DEF) pump is also dead now, so far it hasnt thrown a check engine light, i'm hoping to avoid that as I am going to remove everything after I pass inspection this year.

I craved a 335i, not even realizing the 335d was such a nice car. I bought the xi for myself and then later found the d for my wife. I liked hers so much that I bought her a new van and took over the d.

Hah, of course. In Houston, too.

Thanks for the input! This is the sort of thing I was wanting to know. I'm not afraid of doing any of that kind of work so I think I'll be fine with it.
