Boot lid free falls

Hi
If I let go of the rear boot lid it will free fall closed. Should the gas struts prevent this from happening.
Just how much resistance should there be.

The struts need to be replaced. It's an easy job. Many places sell struts but I recommend fcpeuro.com. The ones I purchased from them were good quality.
