I am interested in buying one of the pre-turbo versions of these. Do any forumites own one and have had a positive experience with it?
I have seen posts by a few dissatisfied owners, and am wondering if these cars are all a can of worms, or were those owners the vocal few?

They all had their share of issues. Oil leaks is a matter of when, not if. Valve stem seals around 100k. And the transmissions start acting up when they get a lot of miles (good excuse to get a manual trans, if you can find one). Best advice would be to get the latest one possible, with the least mileage, or get one that's been well maintained and with documents of all repairs done.
