Hey guys, just an update.

I installed my power commander III today, going by shawn foggs website, which i have to say is Excellent, many thanks to that man.

Anyhow, its great being able to control your fueling based on RPM and throttle position.

I am using a vortech FMU, so when i am hitting 1 or 2 psi, it does not do anything at all, and hence i run lean. It brings the fuel pressure up to decent levels at about 3 psi. It seems, even when i am not WOT, say at 40% throttle i would still see boost at low rpms like 2000 - 4000 rpm, but the ECU does not correct as it thinks its WOT (AFM probably maxed out)

This is a problem as it does not adapt fuel timings based on O2 sensor readings.

With the PCIII i can now do a little trick. I ramp up my base fuel pressure to what would provide adequite fueling for 2.5psi (when the vortech FMU is yet to increase the pressure itself).

This in itself will not help, as it would most likley be out of the limits for the ECU to adapt to when the extra fuel is not required, and when it thinks its at WOT it will cease to adapt, but still pull injectgor timings off, by an average of what it was off by when not at WOT.

So what i did was use the PCIII to reduce the fueling at all points where boost would not be seen. At RPM's and Throttle positions where i would see boost i applied a 0% change.

Also i was running a bit too rich at WOT, so i trimmed that down slightly.

Overall the car runs great now. I just put some champion EON1 plugs in too.

One odd thing i have noticed is, when i floor it in first, second or third at low speeds i only really see about 5 - 5.5 psi, but say doing 50 - 60MPH i see about 6psi instead?

Strange.

Anyhow, it runs great, really happy with it.

In a few months i think i might get another M45 SC with the stock 2.55" pulley which should see me with 8 - 9psi.

Thats when the real power comes in.

I reckon i'm on about 185 - 190bhp. Probably see off 325's and 328's fairly easy. The 2.55" pulley should produce about 210 bhp.

Its great, engine bay looks awesome with SC in it, and the whine at full pelt is pretty cool.

Wow the PCIII looks like an awesome unit. Have you thought at all about swapping the AFM to a MAF? It should be pretty easy to do with the PCIII there to fix the mixture...you would not need a signal converter or anything.

not really thought of doing that. Is it a straight swap? Does it increase power?

really have not thought of that at all...

Sweet, PCIII is definitely the way to go if you're going piggyback. Does it have any other inputs to adjust for intake air temp, HFM signal or other sensors besides just going off RPM and TPS?

Boris

P.S. I got your email yesterday but was only home for a few hours... will get back to you when I'm back home.

Switching to MAF probably would not give too much more power, but from what I have read about it, it should greatly improve throtthe response and eliminate the weird behavior the AFM causes when you revv the gas rapidly (engine stumbling). Supposedly it responds more rapidly to the changing intake air conditions since there are no moving parts that need to overcome inertia, and it is more accurate.

I did the AFM to 3" MAF swap on my car and I gained 7whp plus increased throttle response and now I get about 32miles more on a tank.

i think i'll look into this, probably see the boost go up 1 - 1.5psi.

Hey gizmo, hows yours going, got it finished yet?

Heres some pics of the complete setup.

Hey, I've been doing some research on eaton SCs in E36s... how easy was yours to install? How did you get it hooked up to the intake manifold?

You need two friends. One with a lathe and one with a chip burner and then you will be set.

i can imagine getting a chip or getting tuned myself wouldn't be too hard. What would i need a lathe for?

KOOTER

Smaller pully?

Why would you need a smaller pully?

More boost.

gotcha... how much boost would an unmodified M62 be worthy of?
