Hey guys,

I recently picked up a pair of e34 tourings, with the intention of smashing the two together into one slightly nicer car. The nicer of the two was sold as having a bad guibo and center support bearing. I drove two hours with a trailer to pick it up, and so given the low price, I wasn't leaving without it. If nothing else it'll get parted out and scrapped.

Both cars have slushboxes. The car with supposed guibo issues does absolutely nothing when moving the gearshift into any gear, though when shifting back into park it makes a wonderful grating noise. The guibo is definitely shot, I haven't looked at the CSB yet. Still, seems more like the transmission is bad. Even if the guibo completely failed, I'd expect a little more of a reaction from the car when trying to select a gear.

Before I write the car off, is there anything else I should look at? Automatic transmissions are black magic witchcraft to me, so if anyone can shed some light on something obvious I'm missing, you might save another touring from the crusher.

Thanks as always

Put it in gear and check if the output flange rotates. The car will make some interesting noises but it is not going to move without a guibo. If the car has been standing for a while, the shift cable inner may have rusted and seized. Spray some WD40 on it at the trans end and work the shift lever a few times. You may well find park works fine again after that. Well, except it will not hold the car if there is no guibo

If it grinds when going into park, the output is turning. I don't know how the guibo could disconnect completely. Could be anything at this point, but it definitely sounds like the transmission is not connected to the wheels.
