I recently finished my black interior swap and was negotiating a price with a shop to do a paint job. I also recently took possession of Bimmericks Touring. The thought was I was going to sell my newly painted 540i and turn my attention to the touring.

Then last week this happened to my 540! while it was parked in front of my house.

It's is being totaled. So now I have to locate parts/parts car and then get it painted....delays, delays,...https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181030/e17e40ddd51bbe7530bc79cf3629eb20.jpg

Here is a video of the impact from my security camera. the video is at full speed.....I have to tell everyone this when they see it.

I hope that distracted driver had the honesty to take responsibility.

That's a real bummer. I had a car get destroyed at my mothers house when I parked it like that. Drunk driver smashed the rear end and drove off...

He admitted hitting my car but "took responsibility" is a matter of perspective. He admits he did it, but he also admits he has no insurance! Oh, he has no money to offer outside of insurance. So I guess I'm left with his deep felt apology and a broke car. Does that count for taking responsibility?

Not in my book.

Time for small claims court. Get a judgement against him for the cost of repairs.

Small claims is a mixed bag in the 2-3 states I've used it. Usually you waste your time getting a judgment that you then waste a lot more time trying to enforce, which the courts won't do for you unless it's some 5 figures or more. Your state may vary, such as by garnishing wages (I love that term, "garnishing". Would you like a sprinkle of parsley with that?), confiscating assets, threatening jailtime for causing damage while not having insurance... Driving without insurance is itself a misdemeanor in some places.

That driver :rolleyes DWI? Are the police involved?

That's totaled? It looks like a quarter of the damage my car suffered from a deer strike, costing ~$350 in parts to repair. Is the frame horn bent?

No money to pay it... Yeah right. They could take out a payday loan. They can't argue they don't have a vehicle to offer as collateral.

Edit: if that footage is real time, they will have a fun time explaining how they managed to drive so slowly and still hit your car, other than being fully loaded... there also may be a hit'n'run/flee scene of accident misdemeanour if they did drive off.

No police, he didn't flee. The number is an insurance repair estimate that is full of prices that they could find from their parts sources. I think I can source a parts car for 300/400 and scrap the rest for 150. Put it together and get it painted. It's just a pain. And I'm less than excited that even in the communist state of Maryland with mandatory insurance it appears the only penalty of not having insurance is the will say it again!

So your neighbor has no insurance on that minivan?? You are between a rock and a hard place because you can report him but, then your neighbor will get arrested and his/her vehicle will be off the road. But, you have to get payment in some shape or form, at the very least. Small claims is not worth the time and money and that would get very ugly. This is very unfortunate.

I am not from Maryland but, as I understand, Maryland requires uninsured motorist (UM) coverage. As such, your insurance company should pay the claim and, in turn, will seek appropriate legal redress from your neighbor. Establishing liability will be a piece of cake based on your video. I assume you already contacted your insurance carrier. Am I missing something here?

Agreed, my uninsured is taking care of the car. I'm just old and grumpy and tired of stupid crap like this.

Understood and I don't blame you for being mad. Maybe call the police out to the house to do an accident report, which will likely lead to them contacting your neighbor. Should shake him up a bit, and let him know that his apology is not good enough. In any case, good luck with getting your car back on the road. She looks like a keeper.

This is my worst fear. Bad enough that our cars are valued so low regardless of all the care and work we put in, but to have some irresponsible bonehead write it off, impaired and uninsured is just inexcusable.

Hopefully some serious bad karma is on his way. Here an uninsured ticket is near $2000 (first offence). Despite that stats show a good portion of the population drives without insurance. No values and honor left in the world. Sad..

Well another fine day. The parts car I was looking at sold. So more delay in getting parts or find another parts car.

Sorry to hear and see about your car.

I need some bumper parts for my car, could I come and take a look at the bumper you took off, or did you chuck it? I am missing a few pieces on mine, maybe.

If you get a parts car LMK, I need doors on mine, as they are quite torn up.

there is this also. I haven't called that guy yet about doors, and I am not sure where you live but for me Baltimore is not to far.

I found another parts car here (https://baltimore.craigslist.org/cto/6738510362.html)but I cannot do anything till next weekend. It's on the NW side of Baltimore which is about 2.5 hrs from me (Im in St Marys County). If its still there next week I will get a trailer and go check it out.

I just talked to John about the car. Its in Ellicot City now, but that is still about 15-20 mins away from me, so I am supposed to go look at it around 8am on Friday as long as my wife will watch my son. I don't know what you want off the car, but I see it has clear corners, and the doors may be in ok shape. Since I am e34 ignorant, I cant tell if it has a small nose grill hood or not.

I will let you know

Oof yeah crazy stuff happens, I parked my car inside my apartment complex, away from any other car... and then I came back from vacation to see a neighbor's tree fell on my M5, totaling it.
