View Full Version : Trunk Sheet Metal Connection Loose, Rattles/Clicks

The glue joint between my trunks top sheet metal and the supporting brace below has broken in numerous spots (the glue joint break is visible). This causes a metal rattle with normal driving. From the outside I can push down on the sheet metal and hear it touch ("click") the brace. There is maybe a millimeter space between the two pieces. I'm thinking of using either silicon caulking, or a polyurethane adhesive in the joints. I think I can slightly wedge the joint up maybe a millimeter to get the stuff in between the pieces without causing a visible distortion on the outside. Then when I remove the wedge, it will compress creating a solid connection. Has anyone encountered this before (glue joints breaking) and any input on this solution?
Note the car has the Bavsound Stage one sound system and no sub and I'm not a boom boom kinda person. The rattle preceded this upgrade.

QSilver7 has a write-up about this somewhere and how he fixed it. I even followed that to fix the issue on my car, but can't remember what I used. I think you are on the right path, though. Polyurethane caulk adhesive injected into the spaces between the supporting brace and the lid, after removing any old goop that's in the way. Removing the toolkit from the lid will reveal all. The gaps between my trunk lid and the bracing were fairly wide, maybe 4-5 mm.

I'll search for that or send him a PM.
So did you pull out the old glue? Mine (aside from being colored the with the original paint) has hardened stiff. Did you pry out the old hard stuff. The glue is still stuck to one side of the metal. My worry on that would be the aesthetics. I was hoping to inject some between the the old glue and the sheet metal. There are places where there is no glue, maybe that is the place to inject it. Thinking out loud....
I've already removed everything so I have access...

The factory probably used seam sealer.
