Hello

So I have a 528i 1999, with the M52TU. Recently noticed coolant drops on the driveway. Diagnosed it to be dripping coolant from the expansion tank. However upon the replacement/new tank arriving today, I noticed the old tank has coolant coming out of (pic 1)

Which is the location for the level sensor of the coolant. However I’ve read some 528i’s do not have a coolant level sensor..... so without the level sensor wiring, or the actual level sensor, will installing the new expansion tank leak from the same location??? Very confused rn....

I don't have the sensor either. I don't remember if mine looked like that. I'll have a look tomorrow. 10/99 528i

It won’t leak from there, just because you don’t have a sensor installed. My 540 has the sensor, my old 530 had the sensor, both 2001’s, my 2000 528 wagon didn’t have one, expansion bottle had the location for the sensor, never leaked from there.

The sensor if you had one does not contact coolant there is a sliding part in the tank that regersters the level of the coolant and the sensor picks up the location of it. But if you have the low cluster you don't have a low coolant light anyway

You refreshed my brain. The part in the coolant is magnetic right?

Correct. There's a little floaty thing sealed up in the tank so that the level detect can be a completely sealed arrangement. The sensor detects how high that guy is floating at any given time. The hole is completely sealed (unless something has ruptured there... and I think in OP case its more of a case of the drips just drip down to the lowest point at the bottom...)
