i took out manifold to change gaskets and unplugged all the wires from the wire harness want to make sure i put all plugs back correct and what goes where

Didn't you think to mark them or at least take pics?
Don't have an I6, can't help you.

I'm not aware of the existence of an idiot's guide to the connectors and where they go. Typically, the harness is designed such that the connectors will only reach their intended sensors.

Also, some connectors only fit one device.

It's pretty much trivial, once you've done it.

Most connectors are unique, or can only reach one spot.

The only exception is the oil pressure switch and the Evap solenoid connectors. They can be mixed up. The oil pressure switch and connector have a single contact, while the evap solenoid and connector have two contacts.

The other sensor on the oil filter housing is the oil temperature sender. It has an offset key and two contacts.

Incidentally, the oil pressure switch is the only part of the wiring harness that is "unbalanced". All other devices have a return wire, so that no current flows through the engine block. The engine ground wire should only carry the current from the oil pressure switch and starter motor.

I'll see if I can remember the wiring harness connectors:

Front of engine, routed between OFH and PS reservoir

VANOS exhaust control solenoid
Cam position sensor
Thermostat heater

Behind OFH

Oil temperature sender (EV1, offset key, two contacts)
Oil pressure switch (EV1, center key, one contact)
Evap vacuum solenoid (EV1, center key, two contacts)
Alternator (EV1 three position, two contacts or oval two contacts)
Intake cam position sensor (cable from sensor plugs into the only socket on the wiring box)
Throttle body (six contacts, unique)
DISA solenoid
MAF sensor cable, longer than others

Rear-engine
Knock sensor (oxygen sensor type round connector, four contacts, clipped under the manifold)
Starter (ring terminals)
Water temperature sensor on rear of head (varies, double switch has a 4 contact round connector)
SAP secondary air solenoid
Crank position sensor (3 contacts)
Oil level sensor (three contacts, flat with awkward latches)

Top of engine
VANOS intake solenoid
Six injector conduit box
Post-cat oxygen sensors (with no bank keying or marking!)
Pre-cat oxygen sensors (length makes it difficult to mix up)

Ed's right, most of the stuff will only reach the correct connector. The one exception is the oil and VANOS or something... but that'll show up when you start the car as the MIL will go on and the code will tell you which sensor isn't hooked up. There's also a pretty good pictorial of the intake manifold R&R on the e46 fourms.

Hey thanks for this post. I had Evap connection and oil temp connection wrong.
