Hey guys - I have searched everywhere but cannot find the answer to my question - in specific to an unsprung clutch

I am currently installing a ZF 5 speed into my 325i and it came with a gripforce Stage 4 unsprung 6-puck clutch and flywheel combo. Because its second hand, if there were any stickers on it saying what was the gearbox side of the clutch disk, its long gone, so my question is, what side of the clutch disk needs to point towards the gearbox and what side towards the flywheel?

The main defining factors of the clutch disk is the centre spline is flush on one side and sticks out about 10mm+ on the other side. Also, the clutch disk has a center bulge so to speak that bulges out towards the flush side of the center spline (see picture).

I ended up installing the clutch with the protruding spline pointing the gearbox, but I have been rethinking if it should be the other way around. I haven't installed the gearbox yet, but now would be the time to pull the pressure plate off and spin it around if it needs to.

Any help with anyone who has installed a stage 4 clutch before would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Definitely get an answer. I have some recollection that the snout faces the motor but an aftermarket clutch kit with aftermarket flywheel could differ.

Thanks for that and yeah I'll wait till someone has a definite answer. Though I need to get this box in over the next few days, so hopefully someone has a solid idea soon :)

Most likely the ‘bulge’ side of the disk won’t fit facing the engine and would interfere on the crank/flywheel fasteners.

I've had a response saying the extruding center spline should face the gearbox. That'll mean the bulge would have to face the flywheel.
I'll pull the pressure plate off this afternoon to see if the clutch plate spins smoothly with the bulge facing the flywheel. If so, that might be the way to go it sounds.

Well, i decided to install the clutch plate with the flush 'bulge" side facing the flywheel for anyone interested. I'll throw the gearbox in this weekend and will test, will report back with results.

I think you will know immediately if it is wrong.

Well, it all worked out alright. The clutch liked being around the way I put it (flush side and bulge towards the flywheel) and the ZF swap went well. Did up a youtube vid if anyone is interested seeing the swap from start to finish.
